Dr. Tariq Rahim Soomro (Urdu: طارق رحیم سومرو, born 12 September 1970) is a Pakistani Computer Scientist and professor. He is an active researcher and his Research focused on GIS, Big Data, IoT, IDNS, ITIL, Distance Education, E-Commerce, WAP, P2P, Cloud Computing, Green Computing, Quality of Software and Higher Education. He has published in these areas with over 70 peer-reviewed papers[1][2]. He is currently working as Professor of Computer Science at College of Computer Science and Information Systems, Institute of Business Management, Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan.[3]

Education[edit]

Tariq Rahim Soomro received his B.Sc (Hons) and M.Sc degree in Computer Science from University of Sindh. Following this, he earned his PhD Degree in 1999 from Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, under the supervision of Prof. Pan Yunhe.[4]

Research and Publications[edit]

Dr. Soomro published over 70 research articles in national and international journals and conferences.[5][6][7]

Career[edit]

Dr. Soomro served as computer programmer at Automation Center of National Assembly Secretariat, Parliament House, Islamabad, Pakistan from 1995 to 2003. From 2003 to 2017 Dr. Soomro served in United Arab Emirates (UAE); from 2003 to 2006 he served at Ajman University of Science & Technology, Al Ain, UAE, as an active faculty member of Computer Science. From 2006 to 2009 he served as coordinator IT department and coordinator academic affairs at University of Fujairah (formally Fujairah College), Fujairah, UAE. From 2009 to 2014 he served at Al Ain University of Science & Technology, Al Ain, UAE, as coordinator, Head of Science & Engineering Department. During 2014 he also served at SMI University, Karachi, Pakistan as first Dean of Information Technology and Head of Academic Affairs. Later from 2015 to 2017 he served at SZABIST Dubai Campus, Dubai, UAE as Program Manager BS and MS programs. Currently he is serving at College of Computer Science & Information Systems, Institute of Business Management (IoBM) as Professor of Computer Science.[8]


Dr. Soomro is being actively involved in professional organizations, including, Computer Society of Pakistan, Sindh Graduates Association, IEEE[9], ISOC, PMI, IACSIT. He is senior member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) since 2005, remains chair Gold affinity Group during 2002 (region 10), Member Ex-Comm Karachi section 2014 and 2017. Dr. Soomro received the ISOC Fellowship to the IETF to 68th Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Meeting. This meeting took place at Prague, Czech Republic from 18 to 23 March 2007[10]. He is currently Member Task Force on Arabic Script IDNs by Middle East Strategy Working Group (MESWG) of ICANN.[11][12]
