Team Ladybug (stylized as team ladybug and Team Ladybug, LLC) is a Japanese video game developer active since 2017. It was founded by the dōjin soft creators that worked on Pharaoh Rebirth, such as ladybug and krobon. Team Ladybug is best known for their work on licensed metroidvania titles Touhou Luna Nights and Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth, as well as promotional parody games. Their first original project is the 2022 shoot-em-up Drainus.

All of Team Ladybug's games to date were produced by former DenfamiNicoGamer chief editor and Dwango producer Daichi Saito, and feature music by the member peposoft. Many of them were built using krobon's 2D Mogura Engine, which was also used for his earlier works under the name Krobon Station.

History

Since 1998, a dōjin soft developer under pseudonym krobon has been creating small games to participate in contests or share for free online. He was best known in the early 2000s for his Mogura series of scrolling shooters, but after 2005 decided to put more focus on his 3D modeling career.[1] krobon returned to game development in 2014 with the game Action Mogura, which was submitted to NicoNico Indie Games Fest and won five awards at the event, a first in its history.[2] This work received attention from the Dwango producer Daichi Saito, who offered to serialize krobon's next project, Pharaoh Rebirth, in the online NicoNico Game Magazine.[2][3] The full game saw an enhanced English-localized release on Steam in 2016 as Pharaoh Rebirth+.[4]

After finishing the development on Pharaoh Rebirth, krobon approached Saito for advice, wanting to become a professional who can make a living through game development. Saito suggested creating a team and taking on contract work, which led to krobon forming Team Ladybug with fellow dōjin creators ladybug, who helped with pixel art and story on Pharaoh Rebirth, and peposoft, who made its music and sound effects. While not a part of the team, Saito worked as the producer on every game they would make.[3]

The first job of a newly established team was a Mega Man-styled short game based on KonoSuba light novels, written by Natsume Akatsuki and published by Dwango's parent company Kadokawa. As the game was a bonus with the Blu-Ray/DVD release of the anime, it was not an expensive project, and only around 30 minutes of playtime was expected. The final game, KonoSuba: God's Blessing on this Wonderful World! Revival of Beldia, contained multiple hours of content instead, and was well-received by players.[3] Similar deals followed from Atlus and Aniplex to create small games based on Megami Tensei and Fate/stay night, respectively.[5][6]

To make cross-platform development easier, krobon's old Mogura Engine made with Clickteam Fusion was replaced with GameMaker Studio 2, which was then modified and named Mogura Engine 2. The first title to credit Mogura Engine 2 was a Touhou Project fangame Touhou Luna Nights. As Saito had known ZUN from his field of work, this became Team Ladybug's biggest collaboration yet, and the first game to be released on Steam.[3] They also started work on a game based on the Record of Lodoss War fantasy novels by Ryo Mizuno. Drawing inspiration from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, it also features a polarity mechanic inspired by Treasure's 2001 shooter Ikaruga.[7] Mizuno supervised the project over the course of its development.

Both titles made their debut in early access. In 2018, Saito had founded Vaka with funding from Khara and Dwango, and the company co-published the full release of Touhou Luna Nights with Playism. Saito left Vaka in 2019 to become the CEO of Why so serious?, which co-published the full release of Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth in 2021.[8] Team Ladybug released their first original title Drainus in 2022.
