Teamtechnik Maschinen und Anlagen GmbH (stylized as teamtechnik) is a company active in the areas of production systems and functional testing of products for the automotive, medical and solar energy industries. The company is based in Freiberg am Neckar.[2] In 2020 the company employed 477 people and generated revenues of 116.6 million EUR.[1]

History

The company Teamtechnik was founded by Max Roßkopf in 1976 together with four partners. In the early years, Teamtechnik supplied the automotive sector.[3]

Expansion of activities (1980s-1990s)

In 1983, Teamtechnik entered into a cooperation with the former company Bosch (now Bosch Rexroth AG) to market assembly systems.

In the 1990s, Teamtechnik focused on developing standardised and modularised assembly systems. Based on experience with its own assembly and testing systems, the company developed its first station-modular system in 1990. In 1997, the patented Teamos assembly platform was introduced. In 1999, the first modular testing systems followed for passenger car manual transmissions. In the previous year, the group started its international expansion by founding Teamtechnik Corp. in Lawrenceville (Georgia), USA.[4] At the end of the 1990s, the group introduced a medical technology division to provide medical assembly systems.[3]

Internationalisation and diversification (1998-2016)

In 1998, the founder's son Stefan Roßkopf joined the company as managing director. His father retired in 2001. In 2005, the company entered the solar industry[4] with stringers for connecting solar cells.[5] In the same year, Teamtechnik Production Technology Sp. z o.o. was founded in Kraków, Poland,[4] which was sold at the end of 2019.[6] In addition, Teamtechnik entered the Chinese market in 2010 by founding two subsidiaries, Teamtechnik Production Technology (Suzhou) Ltd. in Suzhou/China and Teamtechnik Production Technology (Jintan) Ltd. in Jintan/China.[7] In 2011, Teamtechnik entered into a ninety percent shareholding in Pfuderer Maschinenbau GmbH, a manufacturer for fast-cycle, cam-controlled automation systems.[8] In 2016, Pfuderer's name was changed to Teamtechnik Automation GmbH.[9]

Factory expansion (2013-2018)

In 2013, Teamtechnik commissioned the first self-sufficient photovoltaic system with storage battery in Baden-Württemberg. The surplus solar power covers part of the energy demand from production.[10] Due to the increasing demand for e-vehicles, Teamtechnik has been manufacturing test benches for e-drives as well as assembly and testing equipment for batteries since 2016. In the course of this, the production capacities in Freiberg were expanded three times between 2013 and 2018.[11] Since 2018, Teamtechnik has been producing test systems for the Volkswagen Group, including the Porsche Taycan, in the newly built production hall.[12]

Corporate integration into the Dürr Group (2020s)

In December 2020, the Dürr Group acquired a majority stake in Teamtechnik. Stefan Roßkopf, chairman of the management board of Teamtechnik, retained management of the activities as a business unit within the Dürr Group.[13] The takeover was part of the Dürr Group's plan to become more independent of the automotive industry[14] and to expand the medical technology business unit as a third pillar[15]. Teamtechnik in turn expanded its battery division in the course of the Dürr Group's participation.[16]

Recent development

In 2019, the storage manufacturer Tesvolt began construction of Europe's first Gigafactory for battery storage systems in Wittenberg. Teamtechnik provided the technology for the semi-automated production line.[17] In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the company commissioned a facility to produce rapid tests that can detect the coronavirus.[18] In 2021, Teamtechnik provided the production equipment for Heckert Solar's 400-megawatt module plant in Langenwetzendorf, Thuringia.[19]

In July 2021, the Dürr Group acquired Hekuma GmbH, based in Hallbergmoos near Munich, which was subsequently incorporated into the Teamtechnik group. Through the acquisition, Teamtechnik further advanced the automation business in the field of medical technology and expanded its customer base. At the time, Hekuma employed around 180 people and generated revenues of around 40 million EUR.[20]

Corporate structure

Teamtechnik Maschinen und Anlagen GmbH is the holding company of the Teamtechnik group. 75% of the shares are held by the Dürr Group, the remaining 25% are owned by Stefan Roßkopf.[1] In addition to the main site in Freiberg, Teamtechnik has another site in neighbouring Ludwigsburg. Further, Teamtechnik has a direct presence with subsidiaries in China and in the USA,[21] which commission local sales and services, as well as for local production of automated assembly systems.[1] Hekuma is headquartered in Hallbergmoos.[22]

The following companies belong to the corporate group:[1]

  • Teamtechnik Corp., Lawrenceville/USA,
  • Teamtechnik Automation GmbH (formerly "Pfuderer Maschinenbau GmbH"),
  • Teamtechnik Production Technology Ltd, Suzhou/China,
  • Hekuma GmbH, Hallbergmoos[22].

The subsidies in China and USA, among other other things, are responsible for local sales, machine commissioning and local customer service as well as local production of automated assembly systems.[1] Teamtechnik Automation GmbH plans and develops fast-cycle, cam-controlled systems for automated production as well as for feeding technology.[8] Hekuma, acquired in 2021, is a supplier of automated systems for the large-scale production of disposable plastic products used in medication, diagnostics and laboratory technology.[20]

Products

The Teamtechnik group is active in the automotive, medtech and solar sectors,[2] among others. In the field of assembly and testing technology, the company has various patents, such as for the Teamos process-modular plant platform,[23] which makes it possible to incorporate an individual mechatronic process module into a basic plant frame for each assembly or testing process (e.g. joining, screwing, gluing, labelling, leak testing).[24][25]

Teamtechnik systems are integrated assembly and testing stations in the following business areas:

  • Process-modular assembly and testing technology (e.g. for batteries, inverters, control units, oil pumps, sensors, actuators, transmission mechatronics),[26]
  • Testing technology for e-drives and all transmission types (manual, automatic, hybrid, double clutch, DHT, CVT, all-wheel drive),[26]
  • Assembly and testing equipment for medical technology (e.g. injection systems, inhalers, dialysis filters, syringes and inhalers),[27][14]
  • Stringers for solar technology for stringing together and connecting solar cells to form strings[19].
