Hanane Lafif (born in Casablanca in 1987, Morocco) is a Moroccan Hip Hop artist known by her stage name Tendresse. The rapper became known during the 2000s for being one of the first Moroccan female rappers. She has been an active rapper for nearly 20 years in the Moroccan music scene performing in music festivals in Morocco and Europe. She is currently the Moroccan female rapper with the longest lasting music career. In 2018, Tendresse was one of the women featured in Arte's cultural magazine "Tracks", a musical programme devoted to feminist artists in several countries including Morocco to celebrate the International Women's Day.[1]
Early history and career
Hanane grew up in the popular neighbourhood of Bourgogne surrounded by nine brothers and sisters. She started writing poems in Arabic and French when she was a young girl, even though writing poetry was forbidden at her house.[2] In the early 2000s, Tendresse formed her first rap group, B-Click (B for her neighbourhood Bourgogne in Casablanca) with whom she released her first maxi album. In 2006, she joined the group Xsid releasing a mini-album called Come Back. In February 2006, she released the song Underdog in collaboration with the well-known DJ Cut Killer for the mixtape Freestyle Maroc produced in France. In 2010, Tendresse released the single Kola Mra (Every Woman) where the rapper voices grievances of Moroccan women. She performed this song in Al Aoula, the first Moroccan public television channel. In 2015, the rapper released a video clip and song. After years of silence, Tendresse released an EP in 2020 called Lagertah. She is currently working on an EP called Gold. Tendresse has participated in many music festivals in Morocco and internationally. She was invited to Festival H20 in Agadir for its first edition in 2005 and then in 2007 and 2008. In 2011, she performed in Brussels at the Festival Hip Hop(e) devoted to women artists. That same year, she was invited by Casa Árabe (Madrid) to participate in the event "Arab Women and Active Citizens".[3]. In the summer of 2011, Tendresse performed in Festival Voix de Femmes (Women's Voices) in Tetouan.[4]
Critical response
Tendresse’s style has been praised for being honest and engaged, winning the admiration of her peers[5] The Moroccan magazine TelQuel claimed her EP Lagertah was "a rallying cry"[6] with songs oscillating between galvanizing energy and demanding anger.
