Termission is a Brazilian progressive metal band formed in 2020 by Bruno Massaini and Fred Wynyk in Berlin, Germany. The duo first met in a cover band that eventually became known as Nobrakes, in São Paulo.
Termission was formed after a 2-year hiatus between 2018 and 2020, a fact that inspired the name of the band's first single, Hiatus.
Both Bruno and Fred collaborated in other projects over time, such as Amanda is Dead, Heavenwalls, Adolf Jurgens, and Nobrakes, where they originally met.
History
Formation & Nobrakes (2011–2017)
The cover band that eventually became known as Nobrakes originated before 2011, the year drummer Fred Wynyk joined the band. At the time, the band had no name and no bass player, and Fred decided to join as a bassist. At some point, Bruno and Fred realized they had a friend in common long before they met in the band, and that they had even spoken through chat years before, when planning for an audition at a music school in Brazil together with that friend, a plan that never materialized.
The musical chemistry became clear right from the beginning of the cover band, which was at one point called Green Labels. During that time in the band, both Bruno and Fred evolved musically together, and Bruno eventually encouraged Fred to set aside covers and start creating original songs.
Bruno had been a long-time fan of progressive music in general, and he encouraged Fred to listen to progressive metal bands like Dream Theater. Despite knowing few progressive songs, Fred had never engaged with the style until Bruno explained how the songs should be listened to. Fred then understood the complexity of the style and became inspired by it, to the point that both of them started to compose fragments. Their first original song with progressive elements dates from 2013, and has not been released to date.
Many original songs were created over the period of 2013–2017. While Nobrakes was a cover band, the other members allowed space for composition. However, the musical style, creativity, and execution needed to fulfill the requirements of the new songs created a gap in fulfillment and enjoyment within the band. This situation, together with both Bruno and Fred moving to Berlin, culminated in the band's inactivity since 2017. Nobrakes still tried to continue by improving some of these original songs and by sharing old cover recordings on their YouTube Channel over the years, though.
Nobrakes's Archives (2013-2020)
Since 2013, mainly Bruno and Fred had worked together on several original songs, initially designed to be performed with their cover band, Nobrakes. Their friendship with the bandmates and their love for the band made them believe they would be able to create and play those songs together. However, they were never able to deliver the songs as Nobrakes, for many reasons, which with time caused some frustration. However, Fred and Bruno kept creating music together along the way, to the point that they realized that both of them could actually create something new, from scratch.
With many unpublished songs in their repertoire and with life-changing plans to move to Germany, Bruno and Fred decided to put Nobrakes compositions on hold. When both were in Germany in 2017, they formed a couple of cover bands with new friends, just to play live music for a while. One of these bands became promising, and they decided to record a few cover songs. One day in the studio, Fred recorded five songs just on the drums, and one of them ended up being used for a Nobrakes cover of The Pretender, by the Foo Fighters, recorded in one take. However, due to other circumstances, the cover bands stopped, and both Bruno and Fred were forced to stop playing music for two years between 2018 and 2020.
None of the original songs from Nobrakes Archives have been published to this day.
Termission (2020-present)
Around May 2020, Fred and Bruno got together again and, within weeks, they came up with a new song which became their first single, Hiatus. Since then, the duo have created a few more songs and continue to create songs to this day.
From time to time, they review the Nobrakes Archives in the hopes that, in the near future, they will revisit those songs and publish them.
Musical Style
Termission is a mix of heavy metal and progressive metal.
