The Thai music industry has several idols and idol groups. In recent years,there has been Japanese idol culture has become very popular in the country spawning a local idol culture unique to thailand and a number of performers / groups that largely follow the Japanese idol concept.[1]
The 2000s saw the birth in of idol groups in Thailand, with groups such as China Dolls and Venus Flytrap, the later being the first transgender idol group in South east Asia.[2][dead link]. In the 2010s there was also an increase in idols, as well as the appearance of the 48Group franchise in Thailand.[3]
The idol scene growth saw the birth of groups like BNK48, SY51, Sweat 16! , Evo Nine and CGM48, Daisy Daysi and SBFIVE. In December 2018, BNK48 was invited to perform together with AKB48 in the 69th NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen (第69回NHK紅白歌合戦, The 69th NHK Red & White Song Battle), making a Milestone in Thai Pop music story.[4][5]
