Geography

Thambikkottai is a Village in Thanjavur District. It is located between Muthupet and Pattukkotai, and around 360 km away from Chennai. The Village lies adjacent to the Bay of Bengal and is in the southernmost part of the Cauvery delta. The rivers Koriayar and Pamaniyar join near Muthupet, and there is a lagoon, which is rich in fish.

Thambikkottai is an ideal place for fishing and bird hunting. It is well known for its fishing industries such as finfish (koduva), shrimp and crab. A natural mangrove forest, Alayathi Kadu, is one of the largest of its kind in India. Which holds equal share of land among with Muthupet.

Thambikkottai was heavily affected by Cyclone Gaja on the early hours of 16 November 2018. Wind speed gusting up to 140–160 kmph in Thambikkottai devastated hundreds of huts and thousands of trees in Thambikkottai itself. Many houses with sheet roofing fell down during the cyclone. More than 300 electric poles and 15+ transformers fell down, and Thambikkottai got power supply only after 31 days since Cyclone Gaja made landfall.

Thambikkottai consists of 5 sub-villages namely Vadakadu, Maravakkadu, Melakadu, Othiyadikadu, Keelakadu. Here Keelakadu Village will be covered by Thiruvarur District. Other 4 Villages come under Thanjavur Village. It is mainly famous for Aruva (Indian Traditional Weapon). That is used for defending from others.
