Christian Friedrich Johannes Büttner (Born 1 June 1979), known as TheFatRat, is a German record producer and musician. His genre is often described as "glitch-hop".[1] He is best known for his 2014 song "Unity," which has more than 100 million views on YouTube,[2] and his 2016 Jackpot EP which reached #23 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart.[3] As of December 2018, his YouTube channel has over 3.3 million subscribers and over 680 million views.[4]

Music career[edit]

In his youth, Büttner practiced the flute at the age of four, the piano at the age of 6 and participated in music classes at his school.[5]

Büttner began producing music in 2001 under his real name. He began by making background music for television, radio and advertisements and produced music for DJs.

In 2010, Büttner produced the song Mignon Mignon for René la Taupe, which became a number-one single in France.[6] Around that time, he also produced the song "Audubon Ballroom" on Lupe Fiasco's album Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1, which charted at #5 on the Billboard 200.[7]

In July 2011, he began making solo music under the pseudonym "TheFatRat," a nickname given to him in his youth.[8] His career began with the release of his first EP, Do Be Do Be Do.

Büttner's music is popular within YouTube, and has been used in over 1.5 million YouTube videos.[9]

His single "Unity" was included on the album Sounds of Syndication Vol. 1[10] curated by Tom Cassell, one of the most subscribed streamers on Twitch.tv.

In November 2016, Büttner released his second EP, Jackpot on the Universal Music label.[9] The EP reached #23 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart.[3] In December 2016, Büttner started a record label, The Arcadium, in collaboration with Universal Music.[11]

In June 2017, he released the single "Fly Away" featuring vocalist Anjulie. In July, he performed at the Electric Forest Festival.[12] In October 2017, he released the single "Oblivion" featuring vocalist Lola Blanc.

In March 2018, he released the single "MAYDAY".[13] In July 2018, he released "Warrior Songs", a music pack for the video game Dota 2, which has been made available in the game as of September 13, 2018,[14] according to Matthew "Cyborgmatt" Bailey, director of operations of Team Secret.

In December 2018, he posted a video about about how YouTube's content ID system is "broken", as one anonymous user claimed all the earnings for one of his songs and YouTube refused to settle the dispute.[15][16][17] He is currently signed onto Casablanca Records, which is owned by Universal Music Group. On December 23, 2018 he released a post on Instagram saying that his video was no longer being stolen and that the person who was stealing it got their channel removed. He thanked all his followers for helping him get his video back.
