The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara are a UK art rock band from London comprising of Daphne Ang(Singapore) and Andrea Papi(Italy). Coming together in early 2020 to record their debut full-length studio album, Full Spectrum, the duo are fast establishing their niche in music for pioneering a form of expression through their use of poetry, performance in their genre-blending music.[1]Their work is marked by their innovative use of art, visuals and the medium of video, in presenting their sonic experimentations in visual form.[2]
Drawing inspiration from Tool and Kraftwerk, as well as the poetry of Sylvia Plath, Virginia Woolf, and Jim Morrison, The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara's music brings poetry, literature, art, and history together into a space where rock and metal meets electronic.[3] Their musical and lyrical themes are very much rooted in the duo’s interests in classical literature and theatre, as well as in the fields of philosophy, history, and psychology.[4]
History
Formation and Full Spectrum (2020–2021)
Based out of the heart of London’s vibrant rock scene in Camden Town, the group has released seven singles to date, each accompanied by a self-produced music video. July 31, 2020 marked the duo's debut with the release of Atoms, described by Rachel Makinson of Right Chord Music as "a piece of art in its own right".[5]
This was followed by the release of their second single, titled “Psychopath's Monologue”, on August 28, 2020. Inspired by Dante Alighieri’s Inferno, the techno-metal track reached number one in the Re-Ex Underground Top 40 Chart.[6]
In September 2020, The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara released their third single, titled “Deus Ex Machina”. The song is a musical and lyrical tribute to Oedipus Rex, an Athenian tragedy written by the Greek playwright Sophocles and first performed around 429 BC.[7] The song hit number one on the Re-Ex Pop / Rock Top 40 Chart.[8] This was followed by their fourth single titled “Mata Hari”, released on October 16, 2020.[9]
In November 2020, The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara released their fifth single "The Descent" on November 5.[10] This was accompanied by a video produced by Daphne Ang and Andrea Papi. According to the band, the song's lyrics are narrated through the voice of Mother Nature who recites an ominous monologue to warn mankind of an imminent disaster.[11][12] This video is a montage of public domain archival footage courtesy of the U.S. Geological Survey, NASA, and the National Archives and Records Administration.[13]
The duo released their second single of the month, “[Love in the Time of Pestilence]” on November 27, 2020, which was featured in the Spotify Editorial Playlist, “[The oTHERS]”, together with some of “the most innovative and forward thinking metal of today”, according to Spotify.[14]
