The Complete History of The Howling
The Complete History of The Howling[1][2][3] [4]is an account of The Howling film franchise written by best selling English author Bryn Curt James Hammond[5] (who also authored A Case for Murder: Brittany Murphy Files) with a foreword by Howling II’s Philippe Mora and a behind-the-scenes diary from Ghostbusters II FX artist William Forsche (Howling IV: The Original Nightmare). When The Howling premiered in 1981 the film introduced cinema-goers to an all-new kind of movie monster spawning seven Howling sequels as of 2018. The book was released in paperback in 2018.
The Complete History of The Howling is the first book to chronicle the making of all eight feature films and take an in-depth look at the film’s source material by Gary Brandner, which began life in 1977 as a trilogy of books.[2][6][1][7][8][9][10][11]
Gary Brandner[edit]
The Complete History of The Howling takes an look at the novels that spawned the film series, which were authored by Gary Phil Brandner (1930–2013). The first book in the series was loosely adapted as a motion picture in 1981. Brandner's second and third Howling novels, published in 1979 and 1985 respectively, have no connection to the film series, though he was involved in writing an early draft of the screenplay for the second Howling film, Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf. The book also discusses the American author’s other works of fiction, which include Cat People and Cameron's Closet. Brandner died of esophageal cancer in 2013.[12]
Philippe Mora’s foreword backlash[edit]
Philippe Mora’s foreword received a mostly negative reception. Wayne Miller of Werewolves.com wrote
THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF THE HOWLING is written by Bryn Curt James Hammond and will feature an introduction by Philippe Mora, who directed Howling 2 and Howling 3. (This introduction should be about ten pages long, and should consist of nothing more than Mora stating “I’m sorry!” over and over. And the guy should have to write it by hand while sitting naked in a meat locker and being spritzed with freezing water. Yes, Howling 3 is THAT abysmally bad. Mora should be exposed to SAW-esque tortures for committing such a transgression.)[13]
Howling III: The Marsupial’s 30th anniversary[edit]
The Complete History of The Howling book tour concluded on the 30th anniversary of Philippe Mora’s third movie, Howling III: The Marsupial [14] which was released November 1987.
Howling VII: New Moon Rising[edit]
The Complete History's coverage of Howling VII: New Moon Rising reveals that most of the film’s cast was arrested for illegal marijuana grows before filming began, forcing Clive Turner to cast locals.[15] The Complete History states New Moon Rising was planned from its inception to be the end of the series. It had been decided when Howling VI: The Freaks was being written by Kevin Rock that The Freaks would be a two-parter but when the film didn’t make as much money on VHS, the sequel was scrapped. Later Bob Pringle and Steven Lane leased the name to Clive Turner as they had done previously, leaving the franchise in the hands of Allied Vision Ltd. and Turner.[5]
Pre-release reception[edit]
The Complete History of The Howling’s early critical response was generally positive. Philip Rogers (Nerdy UK)[2] stated the book was “written with a sharp humour.” Nick Bond[2] (du-had.com) added the book was “very cool”[2] and Matt Doyle[16] said it was “wonderfully intimate.”[17][2][7][7][18][9]
William (Bill) Forsche Howling IV: The Original Nightmare diary[edit]
SFX artist William (Bill) Forsche (Nightmare on Elm Street 4) wrote a behind-the-scenes diary for The Complete History that detailed his involvement in Howling IV: The Original Nightmare[19] where he revealed that almost all of the werewolf action filmed was left on the cutting room floor.[20]

The Complete History of The Howling’s press launch took place April 17, 2018 at Gunmakers Arms[21] where they screened Philippe Mora’s Howling III[14] & author Bryn Curt James Hammond and Philippe Mora[21] took part in a live Question & Answer.[8] The Complete History of The Howling book tour kickstarted May 12, 2018 at Edinburgh Horror Con[22][1] and moved onto London Horror Con where Bryn Curt James Hammond discussed the conception of the book.
