The Cybertronic Spree is an independent cover band, which primarily covers songs from the Transformers franchise. Self-described as "Rockstars in disguise",[2] they are known for their covers of the soundtrack to the 1986 film in particular, as well as other covers of 1980s metal, and their elaborate costuming.
History
In a 2015 interview with the Toronto Star, the band narrated a fictional history which holds that the 1986 film was a documentary, and that the Transformers fell on hard times after the original TV series concluded in 1987. After some years working in other jobs such as construction, the Transformers reunited.[3]
The band was initially formed to perform live at Nerd Noise Night in 2013.[4]
In 2019, Cybertronic Spree launched a Kickstarter to fund an album which covered the 1986 soundtrack.[5] Against a goal of CA$15,000, the band raised CA$139,000. The group was featured on a variant cover for issue six of the IDW Transformers comic series as a homage.[6]
The group planned a US tour in 2020, but this was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.[7] Instead the group recorded a number of videos together remotely, including a cover of Jump by Van Halen in collaboration with Chris Hornbrook (Poison the Well), Courtney Cox (The Iron Maidens), Stephen Brodsky (Cave In/Mutoid Man) and Gwarsenio Hall.[8]
The group headlined MAGfest 2023.[9]
