plot[edit]

The novel tells the story of Hanna Yacoub, a Christian man from Beirut, whose profession is selling eggs. He was by chance on the docks of the port when a group of Druze fighters were taken away, as a result of the civil war in Mount Lebanon between them and the Maronites, which broke out in 1860, and the Ottoman firman issued a decision to deport 550 Druze To the prisons of the Kingdom in the countries of the Bulgarians, as punishment for their assault on the Maronite Christians. Hanna Yacoub was included with them, as he was exiled and taken by sea to the Belgrade fortress on the outskirts of the Ottoman Empire, instead of another person who was released after his father paid a bribe to the Ottoman officer. The novel revolves around the suffering of Hanna and the rest of the prisoners during 12 years of imprisonment in Belgrade and other Balkan countries.[4]

This trip was followed by a lot of suffering. Some of them died in the Belgrade fortress and others in Serbia, Montenegro and Pristina, because of the harsh nature. Nevertheless, the prison united the discordant, those who were fighting among themselves, as soon as they were placed in one place until they were united, which is the essence of the historical incident.

Back home, the novel tells about Hanna Yacoub's wife, Helena Constantine, and their daughter, Barbara, and how the husband's absence has affected him since he went out in the morning with a basket of eggs without returning for twelve years, and how the wife struggled, and resisted all inconveniences, with one hope that the husband would return.

Narration[edit]

The construction of the story came on the pattern of parallelism between the two stories: the detainees in exile, and the story of the wife. One narrator narrated the two stories, the All-Knowing Narrator, who surrounds the event in all places, although sometimes he leaves the narration of the character with the pronoun Ego.[5]

criticism[edit]

Critics of the Arab Booker Prize jury considered this novel to be:

"The most distinguished, brilliant and diligent work, which deserved the Arab Booker Prize for Fiction for the year 2012 for its strong portrayal of the fragility of the human condition by re-creating a historical reading of the past in a highly sensitive language."
