"I will not leave my home" (Arabic: لن أغادر منزلي) is the first work of the young Lebanese writer Salim Butti, published in 2017 by Dar Nouvel Hachette Antoine in Beirut.[1] The publisher says about this work:[2] "in the beginning, the name was about some letters or a sound they call you by, where you remember the love and belonging for family and homeland, for school and for the old tree in front of the house, for Grandma's scent and for black and white family photos. In the beginning, it was an identity, a stigma, a curse, a biological sorting of an organism breathing for the first time, crying for the first time in a situation. The hero of this novel carries many homelands and more characters. He is not an Arab, but rather the most Arab and Lebanese person. Of all the homelands, he chose the most ungrateful. Unfortunately, it let him down, and he remained ill with his love. Now, he is the son of all the homelands. He feels that all houses are his even though he doesn’t have a house. His only port is a grandmother’s chest who has gone, and his soul, his first name, his first name, his first identity, refuses to let go of her tabby”. The newspaper Al-Nahar published an article about the novel entitled " This novel is the hell of non-belonging."[3]
Criticism[edit]
Many literary activists and readers criticized this work as it is considered a difficult work for the average reader because of its complex structures and difficult sentences, says a reader on the Goodreads " language page.
Genre[edit]
The director of the Lebanese Reading Club says about the novel, "It is a realistic novel with social and political dimensions and is semi-subjective, as it is inspired by reality. The novel is full of symbols and creative enhancements employed by the writer in the service of the main themes of the novel, namely: war, alienation, asylum, identity, belonging, wandering, and Homeland. Each of these themes develops with the chapters of the novel and passes to different times, places, and characters that meet and sometimes repel each other. The writer enumerates the aspects of the war, its results, the nature of its executioners, victims, scenes, and routines of displacement, asylum, despair, and physical and psychological death. Only the narrator watches everything that is happening on the stage of the theater of the homeland, shattered by senseless wars. The narrator is a witness who is overwhelmed by pain that led him to search far away from his home and Homeland. “Only the narrator watches everything that is happening on the stage of the theater of the homeland, shattered by absurd Wars.[4]
