The Etilaat Roz is a 2022 documentary film co-produced by Zaki Daryabi and Abbas Rezaie.[1] For nearly a decade, journalists at the Etilaat Roz newspaper have been exposing rampant corruption within Afghanistan's government. In an unexpected turn of events, the journalists at the Etilaat Roz newspaper, who are mostly belonging to the Hazara ethnic group, found themselves trapped and extremely vulnerable to the Taliban's attack at any moment. The journalists are not only the most wanted targets of the Taliban but they are also Hazaras who have been indiscriminately and systematically targeted by the Taliban and other Sunni extremist groups in Afghanistan.[2] [3] The film documents the anxiety, fear, and hopelessness among the staffers within the newspaper bureau following the takeover of Kabul by the Taliban.[4] Since its release, the film has been screened in different film festivals worldwide.[5][6]
Synopsis[edit]
The Etilaat Roz presents a firsthand narrative of the Taliban's takeover of Kabul in 2021. Abbas Rezaie, Hazara filmmaker and member of the Etilaat Roz newspaper team, diligently documents and interviews his passionate colleagues from the editorial staff in the days leading up to, during, and following the seizure of power by the Taliban.[7] Initially taken aback by the surreal circumstances, the individuals gradually come to terms with the harsh reality unfolding at their very doorstep. As the Taliban intensify their focus on suppressing the free press, tensions escalate among Rezaie's colleagues, who must navigate the delicate balance between ensuring their families' safety and upholding their commitment to delivering unbiased news. Through Rezaie's compelling camera work, this dramatic narrative portrays a group of brave journalists engaged in an arduous struggle for truth, freedom, and their very lives, offering viewers an immersive experience within this rapidly evolving landscape.[8] The documentary shows scenes of journalists returning from the Taliban captivity with visible signs of torture and mistreatment.[9][10]
