the Family is an American independent entertainment company that specializes in film and television production, as well as on-set virtual production. It is based in New York City.

The Family was founded in 2015 by Steve Dabal and Griffin Yu, alongside artists Yo-Yo Lin and Filippo Nesci. Prior to the Family, all had worked extensively in visual effects, animation, and film production before leaving their positions to co-found the company, the Family, which specializes in technology-driven storytelling.

History[edit]

2014–2016: Founding and early years[edit]

The Family was founded in 2014 by filmmakers Steve Dabal and Griffin Yu. Dabal, formerly the Film Director of the infamous defunct Tree Collaborations with Oliver Tree[3], and Yu, an independent Cinematographer.[4] The name "the Family" was inspired by the company's grassroots start being a group of freelancers collectively working under one roof in an apartment.

…Starting as a network of freelancers working across pre, physical, and post-production, the Family came together as a company looking to merge technology and storytelling, empowering artists by leaning away from the siloed work styles that are common in the film industry, and more towards an amorphous production that best benefits creative execution.

The company's first exploration into technology-driven storytelling began with Ricerca VR, premiering at SXSW[6] and New York Film Festival [7]

In July 2016, the Family continued their work in Virtual Reality for the HTC Vive tool Tilt Brush.[8]

…Initially, the VR was meant to be a proof of concept to lure a gallery or museum, but the piece completely stands on its own and is one of the best examples of how innovative artists can harness the potential VR to tell stories in physical space.

— Jude Dry and Chris O'Falt, [9]

On August 26, 2016, the Family created an animated music video for the Capital STEEZ song, "Herban Legend", which premiered at the second annual Steez Day Concert in Los Angeles, California on July 7, 2016.[10]

2017–2019: Digital & Physical artwork[edit]

In October 2017, the Family created and produced, Manifest 1.0, a series of physical installations created to explore sonic and visual art through multi-sensory experiences.[11] It featured musician Sunni Colón.[12]

…The installation plays with angles, light, sound, and scent. The latter caught me as most striking. Not often do I consciously register the smell of my experiences, and even less often do I get to take said scent home with me in a bottle. Colón worked closely with Melisa Dougherty, a designer from The Family, to make this idea a reality. Colón relates the scent to an air cabinet with a hint of sweetness. The fragrance is packaged and labeled “Manifest 1.0 Testu.” This way, when you leave the space you can take the scent with you; a way to remind yourself of the experience after it has passed.

Through 2018, the Family worked with Joey Bada$$, Wale, Young M.A, Sean Price[14], and T-Pain. Alongside producing campaigns for Broadway plays Sing Street (musical), Chicago (musical), Mrs. Doubtfire (musical), Derren Brown's Secret, Slave Play, Mike Birbiglia's The New One, The Phantom of the Opera (1986 musical), and Moulin Rouge! (musical). [15]

2020–present: Virtual Production[edit]

On January 27, 2021, the Family created and produced live virtual program Make Earth Cool Again presented as part of the World Economic Forum featuring with Bear Grylls, Billie Eilish, Finneas O'Connell, Parisa Fitz-Henley, Robert Downey Jr., Rainn Wilson, Bryony Worthington, Baroness Worthington, Lil Dicky, Drew Scott, Jonathan Scott (reality TV), and Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway.[16] Additionally, Win Butler and Régine Chassagne of Arcade Fire performed on the livestream to promote the fight against climate change.[17] The show was directed by Steve Dabal and written by Chuck Tatham[18]. It was distributed by Participant (company). [19]

On November 1, 2021, the Family opened an LED Virtual Production Studio in New York City for On-set virtual production.[20]
