The Fantastic Quest is the second album from the American rock band Underlined Passages.

Content[edit]

The nine-track album was released on vinyl, compact disc, and digital download with Mint 400 Records, on 14 April 2016. It was recorded between December 2015 and February 2016, and produced by Michael Nestor. The vinyl issue includes two bonus tracks, "All In Your Head (Vaprowave Mix)" and "Hypercontextualization." The album is described as indie pop, and draws comparison to the music of the alternative southern rock band Band Of Horses, the indie pop rock band Death Cab for Cutie, the pop rock band Nada Surf, and the post-rock emo band American Football.[1][2] The opening track "Calamine" was released as a single, on 31 May 2016.[2]

Reception[edit]

A review by Jim Testa in Jersey Beat says "this music has emerged through a time warp from the heyday of Eighties college rock, with its melliflous reverb'd vocals and easy going pop jangle" and ends with "this is solid, unpretentious songcraft that's clearly been crafted with care and precision, easy on the ears and soothing to the soul."[3] Colin McGuire of Frederick News-Post calls The Fantastic Quest a "solid-enough collection of songs that will stick with you for days." He likens the song "Everyone Was There" to "90s alt-rock that at one time would have been perfect for your favorite episode of 120 Minutes[;] perhaps the most straightforward track of the set, it moves at a mid-tempo that would make Spacehog proud."[4]

The Big Takeover says "I doubt there will be a more achingly beautiful album of guitar-driven indie-pop this year."[5] The zine Dagger describes the album as "well written/well played mid-tempo pop songs with the right amount of grit (and plenty of hooks). I hate saying that a record sounds "fresh" but yeah, these guys adding some much-needed quality into the pop scene does sound fresh."[6]
