The Fisherman: A Codfish Tale is a 2023 adventure game and edutainment title developed and published by Portuguese indie studio Loading Studios. The narrative is based on the real-life 1942 sinking of the Portuguese cod fishing vessel Maria da Glória by a German U-boat during World War II.[1] The game won a “PlayStation Talents” award in the “Games for Good” category for raising awareness of this overlooked historical tragedy.[2][3]
Development and release
The Fisherman: A Codfish Tale originated as a student project at ETIC (Escola de Tecnologias Inovação e Criação), developed by Vasco Oliveira, Diana Pereira, and Tiago Leitão as part of their BA in Animation and Computer Games.[4] [5] The game was built using the Unity engine and released for Windows on June 30, 2023. Its story centers on the daily life of a young fisherman at the Maria da Glória until the vessel is suddenly torpedoed by the Kriegsmarine U-94, resulting in the death of most of the crew.[1][6][7]
Accolades
Following the team's graduation, Vasco Oliveira continued operating Loading Studios and submitted the game to several competitions. The Fisherman: A Codfish Tale was nominated at the 9th edition of the PlayStation Talents Awards in Portugal, where it won the “Games for Good” category[8] and received a nomination for “Best Narrative.”[9][10][2]
