Following the 2018 release of "Online Doctors Uncovered"[3], an episode of BBC One's Panorama covering the unregulated sale of medicine, The Independent Pharmacy tasked market research company Atomik Research with surveying public awareness of illegitimate pharmacies[4]. With 83% of survey respondents not knowing how to verify the legitimacy of medication[5], the company started a PR campaign to promote the importance of safe purchasing and employed new technology to offer a more secure online service to its customers[6].

Prior to the UK's exit from the European Union, The Independent Pharmacy was certified by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). Since the certification process is only available for countries in the EU, this has since been discontinued[11]
