The Independent Pharmacy is an online pharmacy operating in the United Kingdom. Founded in 2013 by pharmacists Andy Boysan and Scott McDougall, it provides confidential health consultations and sells over-the-counter and prescription medications across the UK..[1].
Overview[edit]
The Independent Pharmacy operates from headquarters at the Bonville Business Centre in Bristol, England. Its team of doctors and pharmacists manages the recommendation and sale of 608 medications for the treatment of 75 conditions[2].
Following the 2018 release of "Online Doctors Uncovered"[3], an episode of BBC One's Panorama covering the unregulated sale of medicine, The Independent Pharmacy tasked market research company Atomik Research with surveying public awareness of illegitimate pharmacies[4]. With 83% of survey respondents not knowing how to verify the legitimacy of medication[5], the company started a PR campaign to promote the importance of safe purchasing and employed new technology to offer a more secure online service to its customers[6].
In 2021, The Independent Pharmacy worked with customer experience platform Mapp and personalisation service Fresh Relevance to improve its customer process[7], making it faster and easier for customers to detail their conditions and determine their needs.
Regulation[edit]
Like other online pharmacies, The Independent Pharmacy is subject to extensive regulation[8]. Pharmaceutical standards are monitored by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). General healthcare is assessed by the Care Quality Commission (CQC)[9]. Doctors are registered with the General Medical Council (GMC), ensuring their fitness to practice.
Meeting an obligation set by the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee (PSNC), The Independent Pharmacy conducts an annual Community Pharmacy Patient Questionnaire (CPPQ), publishing the results on its website[10]
Prior to the UK's exit from the European Union, The Independent Pharmacy was certified by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). Since the certification process is only available for countries in the EU, this has since been discontinued[11]
