"The Light" is the debut single of the Filipino boy group BGYO. It was released on 29 January 2021 as a Digital Single via Star Music.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
Background and production[edit]
"The Light" was written by Distract, MU Doctor and BGYO; composed and arranged by Rogan and Ddank; mixing, mastering, and digital editing were done by Jang Tae In at Seoul Archive.[7]
Release and promotion[edit]
"The Light" premiered on Star Music youtube channel on 28 January 2021 as a lyric video and on the same day, it was released worldwide via digital download.[8][9]
On 29 January 2021, the official music video has been released on BGYO's official youtube channel right after the international "Filomenom" fan con event as part of “Be The Light: The BGYO Launch".[10][11]
Music Video[edit]
The music video for "The Light" was directed by Kring Kim.[12] The opening scene features a quote "Within you lies immense power. Your light can change the world.", then leads to the narrative transitions of flash-forward scenes of the music video showcasing the members' portrayal of the youths' common problems today like mental health (Akira's scenes), violence and bullying (Nate's scenes), identity crisis (Gelo's scenes), academic pressure (Mikki's scenes) and social media addiction (JL's scenes).[13][14][15][16][17][18]
The music video garnered 52,000 Youtube views 5 hours after it's release.[19]
On 6 February 2021, a week after the release, the music video has received more than a million Youtube views, the fastest P-Pop group to reach 1 Million Youtube views in a Debut Single.[20][21][22][23]
Chart Performance[edit]
The same day of its release worldwide, "The Light" debuted at number 3 on the Itunes Philippines Charts.[24]
On the other hand, the music video of "The Light" debuted on Myx Daily Top Ten at number 10 on 2 February 2021.[25]
On 6 February 2021, "The Light" debuted at number 5 on Pinoy Myx Countdown (the weekly roundup of the 20 most popular videos from Filipino Music Artists).[26]
Live Performances[edit]
BGYO performed the "The Light" for the first time live on ASAP Natin 'To on 31 January 2021.[27][28]
On 5 February 2021, BGYO grace the It's Showtime stage as they perform "The Light" live.[29][30]
