"The Lotus Pond" is a 2011 Indian English/Telugu adventure drama film based on school education at boarding schools written and directed by P.G. Vinda. Produced by A.L.Nitin Kumar, it features Akash Petla, Rohit Ranka, Karan Shehgal, Harsh Khurana, and Ramavathar Yadav in the lead roles.[2] The music was composed by Sunil Kashyap while cinematography was handled by P. G. Vinda. Akash Petla portrays Neeraj, Rohit Ranka as Ajay, a boy with springs in his boots, very active in sports, and co-actors Karan Sehgal, a pathfinder, Harsh Khurana, a well-known theater artist from NSD, as Chowdary, a school teacher, and Ram Avatar Yadav appears in a special appearance as a strict principal at a boarding school. The film was in competition at the 17th International Children’s Film Festival of India, ‘The Golden Elephant’,[3] organized under the aegis of the Children's Film Society of India (CFSI) and the Andhra Pradesh government. The direction, performances of the actors, and cinematography received praise and earned several applauses. The Lotus Pond film also got exempted from entertainment tax by the Andhra Pradesh government and was released on 30 September 2011.[4] [5] Upon release, the movie bagged positive reviews, with critics praising the cinematography, performances, and simplicity in narrative storytelling.[6] [7].[8] [9]. Plot
Do you remember the first time you took a train ride alone? Or the first time you stepped on an airplane and felt your stomach churning during take-off? Or the first time you were lost in an unknown place and the only thing you wanted the most in the world was to go home? This is the story about two ten-year-old boys studying in boarding school—a household name in India, with the distinction of having many famous and influential Indians among its alumni. Based in the hills of Kulu, a hill station on the foothills of the Himalayas, the school is well known for its discipline and code of conduct and enjoys a pedigree that no other educational institution in India can come close to. Neeraj and Ajay are two young protagonists and classmates. Neeraj is a daydreamer who is good at academics and extracurricular activities. Neeraj always wanted to pursue and explore things. One of the boys, a dreamer, who is more interested in paintings and other extracurricular activities, is told of a lotus pond by one of the teachers. Intrigued by the beauty of the supposed lotus pond, Neeraj decides to visit it along with his best buddy Ajay. One fine morning, they venture out to explore in search of the lotus pond and end up in the unknown woods. Their search begins in the unknown woods, and despite not knowing any route, they keep going towards the supposed lotus pond with the help of local people. Along the way, they start learning a lot about the life of the people and nature. In spite of all major obstacles, do they succeed in reaching the lotus pond?

Production Development
P.G. Vinda, in the search of the lotus pond, had a real journey discovering places. He wrote a story in the year 2000 and initially, Vinda went through the mountains of Uttarakhand, the valley of flowers, and Hemkund Sahib and Chardham, etc. He felt the mountains were gigantic to explore and travel for kids. He completed the first draft in 2005, went through several drafts, and Vinda pitched the idea to A.L. Nitin Kumar, the producer and creative director of Vihari The Traveller, The TIM Pvt ltd company. They went through recce at Uttarakhand and Himachal locations and finally, P.G. Vinda found the right place after their trekking trip at YHA National Himalayan Trekking trip, the Surkundipass and the Surpass trip. A trip to Ladakh found some locations at a higher altitude of 14,000 ft—Rohtang pass, Suraj Taal, some valley views on the way to Kyelang. Casting director Altaf Hasan found versatile talent through the Himachal Pradesh Repertory theatre circle and found real people and villages. Puri Jagannath’s son, Aksh Petla, played the protagonist, Rohit Ranka as his friend, and Karan Sehgal as a friend in their journey, a village boy. Peejee is a strange man who appears in the film; he is a real nomad who lives in the mountains, and his character is mysterious. Vikram Rathod from Hyderabad Central University, from the Mandi district, played Khemu’s Father; he is an amazing actor to discover. Thakoordas as Shepherd, Mehar, and Ram Singh played a group of gossiping villagers. The rest of the talent was found from Himachal Pradesh.
Filming
The Lotus Pond was shot in two schedules: May–June 2009 and September–October 2009. Keeping the weather conditions and obstacles of working at a higher altitude of 14,000 ft with kids in consideration, we had a break because of heavy snowfall, and the children were unable to climb the mountains. We broke the second schedule. The first part of the film was shot in summer, and the second schedule was in the monsoon, trying to match some of the major scenes. The film started from Manali at an altitude of 1,200 ft and ended with the climax shoot at 14,000 ft of Sarkundi pass and Suraj Tal. The entire filming was completed in 27 days. The first-day shoot was at Hadimbha Temple with the blessing of Hadimbha Maatha.
The principal photography locations began at the very ancient village at Segli near Sanchar village. The kids’ school and campus were shot at Manali DPS school. Major traveling and trekking were at the Parvathi River at Kasol, the Beas river area at Manali, and in Pinewoods on the way to Grahan Village. Rohatgi pass camping at a higher altitude, children were sick, and the temperature was minus degrees. We used to sleep on location, pitch tents ourselves, and have campfires at night, which was very memorable. The freezing snow mountains, horses, and ponies were used for transport, and local people helped. The only trek routes were major obstacles for our team; there was no other way to transport. A.L. Nitin Kumar’s production support was a big help in bringing local guides and a doctor on location, and food and snacks were served very hot. Andhra Pickles and Rasam were a major attraction among us. He took good care, and local support was a major setback. Jeevan Thakoor, Mehar Ramsingh, Thakoordas, they were local talent and the management team. Some leftovers were picked up in Hyderabad. The original film score was composed by Sunil Kashaypp, and additional Himachal folk songs were done by Goldy.
