The Man-Not: Race, Class, Genre, and the Dilemmas of Black Manhood is a book by Dr. Tommy J. Curry. The Man-Not offers more data in the few researched topic area of Black Male Studies. He posits that we should conceptualize the Black male as a victim, oppressed by his sex. The book offers a concept of Black males that could challenge the existing accounts of Black men and boys. This book relates to Hegel and Fanon as Curry examines the historicity of Black men desiring the power of white men who oppress them that has been proliferated throughout academic research across disciplines. Curry examines the effect of racism and sexism on black men, the civil rights movement, and more contemporary Black Lives Matter movements and others stemming from Black Male Death.[1]

Context[edit]

Curry introduces the conceptual foundations for Black Male Studies. This goes far deeper than current gender theories, which cast the Black Male as a pathological aspiring patriarch. Curry argues that Black men struggle with death and suicide, as well as abuse and rape. To this end, he argues that their existence deserves study and theorization. It is an attempt to add more the Black men school of thought. There is Black feminism for example, but he urges an articulation far deeper than that. It is an intellectual, historical, sociological, and psychological analysis of patriarchy. Mainstream feminism does not yet fully understand the role that homoeroticism, sexual violence, and vulnerability play in the deaths and lives of Black males. Thus, Curry challenges current thought of the conditions that actually affect all Black males.[2]
