The New Message from God
The New Message from God is a new religious movement.[1] originating from Boulder CO, USA. It is based on the writings of the movement's leader, Marshall Vian Summers, who claims to be the recipient of a divine communication for the human race regarding climate change[2] and extraterrestrial life[3].
History[edit]
Marshall Vian Summers, the founder of The New Message from God, was a teacher for blind children until 1982 when, he says, he was "called into the desert" by "a voice" that commanded him to record a series of messages from purportedly angelic beings who told him that he was destined to convey God's message to the world[4][5].The following year, Summers trademarked his professed discipline of "inner guidance training."[6][7]
Summers later settled with his wife, Patricia, and their child, Reed, in Colorado, where in 1990 the pair began publishing a series of books, leading with Steps to Knowledge.[8] In 1992 Summers founded The Society for the Greater Community Way of Knowledge, later renamed The Society for the New Message from God[9], a religious non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, publishing and promoting the teachings[10]and the books into which they are compiled for sale through a small publishing house offering only titles by Marshall Vian Summers.[11]
Organization and Establishments[edit]
The Society for the New Message from God is a 501(c) religious non-profit organization established in 1993 to promote The New Message from God[9]. The Society, consisting of 10 members and several "core assistants", is led by Marshall Vian Summers, his wife and his son, who serve as teachers and spokespersons on behalf of the New Message.[9]
Scriptures and practices[edit]
"The New Message from God" refers variously to the religious movement based on the teachings of Marshall Vian Summers, the content of those teachings, or the compilation of spoken audio recordings transcribed into one, multi-volume, single-author work, now estimated at over 9000 pages in length.[12]
The practices of The New Message are contained in the central text, Steps to Knowledge, which prescribes a daily routine of meditation and contemplation with a focus on reconnecting the individual with their spiritual "inner knowing"[13]
Beliefs[edit]
The New Message characterizes God as the creator and source of all physical and non-physical existence and as "the experience of total relationship."[14]
Proponents of The New Message from God insist that it is not affiliated with any specific religion and represents a distinct tradition[15] despite claims that a succession among prophets in the line including Jesus, Buddha, Muhammad now includes this prophet of the New Message.[16]
