The Next Century Foundation (NCF) is a British non-governmental organisation and think tank headquartered in Cornwall, England,.[1] registered as a charity both in the United Kingdom and the United States.[2] The NCF declares an intention to speak to all parties to major conflicts, particularly those in the Middle East as a method of peace-making.[3] Established in 1990 to provide a forum for mediation talks on the Israel-Palestine conflict,[4][5] the NCF’s remit has since expanded to other nations in the region including Yemen.[6]

Activities[edit]

The Next Century Foundation produces policy papers and other conflict reports as well as facilitating peace-making dialogue between factions in conflict scenarios.[7] It has attended a number of academic conferences on related issues, including conflict resolution.[8][9]

Since 2005, the NCF has sent four electoral monitoring delegations to Iraq.[10] The NCF has gone on fact-finding missions in some of the most dangerous areas of Iraq, such as the disputed city of Kirkuk.

The NCF has a number of working groups, providing regular reports on conflict zones such as Syria.[11] Often partnering with other NGOs such as the Kabul Institute for Peace, these reports provide updates on their respective conflicts.[12]

Since 2017, the NCF has been in consultive status with the United Nations,[13] producing written statements to the Human Rights Council on topics such as elections in Bahrain since its 45th session.[14] Since 2020, the NCF has also submitted oral statements to the Council.[15][16]

The NCF has also put on conferences on a variety of subjects, focusing on current conflicts in the Middle East, as well as covering recent political and societal developments elsewhere. Previous conferences have covered the Arab Spring, the Syrian Civil War and the 2015 European Refugee Crisis These conferences aim to involve politicians and political actors from all sides of the debates in order to provide a venue for open and inclusive dialogue for peace. The NCF also holds other forums, which are often more private, in order to discuss new ideas and develop policies. From these discussions, the NCF write non-papers, which are policy papers not associated with any government.

International Media Awards[edit]

In partnership with its subsidiary the International Communication Forum[17], the NCF annually hosts the International Media Awards.[18] These awards recognise excellence in journalism, particularly in the Middle East region[19] Notable recipients have included Jeremy Bowen and Lyse Doucet,[20] as well as a number of regional journalists. Owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2020 and 2021 ceremonies were cancelled.

Organisation[edit]

William Morris has been the NCF's secretary-general since its formation in 1990,[21] when its members included David Alliance, Arnold Goodman, and Haim Yosef Zadok.

The current Advisory Board of the Next Century Foundation is comprised of diplomats, politicians, and clergy. These include the Rev. Larry Wright, Jeremy Hanley, and Baron Stone of Blackheath[22]

Its trustees include the lawyer Vivian Wineman, the Earl of St Andrews and diplomat Mark Gregory Hambley[23]
