The Thaumaturge is an upcoming turn-based strategy, role-playing video game[2] developed by Fool's Theory and set to be published by 11 Bit Studios for Windows - via Steam, GOG, and Epic Games Store[3]. It currently has no release date.

Gameplay[edit]

The Thaumaturge is a turn-based RPG with isometric graphics. According to Fool's Theory it will be story-rich and narrative-driven with morally ambiguous decisions[4], involve character development features, progression systems, and investigation mechanics.[5]

As for the setting, the game takes place in a dark reimagining of 1905 Warsaw. In this universe with "supernatural cracks between the real world and the shadows"[6] there are spirit-like beings known as "Salutors", which can can only be perceived by Thaumaturges - magically-gifted individuals with the ability to tame these creatures and use them "for manipulation of the temperaments and affinities of other people and even ultimately in combat".[7]

Development and release[edit]

The Thaumaturge was initially teased in June of 2022 under the codename "Project Vitriol".[8] It was then announced as "The Thaumaturge" in February of 2023, with an announcement trailer followed by a gameplay reveal.

The game is being developed by the polish studio Fool's Theory (Witcher 1 remake) on Unreal Engine 5, and will be published by 11 Bit Studios. It's being worked on by "a hefty team of around 60 people"[9] and has a budget of around €3.7 million[10], thus being 11 Bit Studio's "biggest publishing project to date".[11]
