The White Saviors is a five episode podcast from the Canadaland network about the WE Charity and the WE Charity Scandal. The podcast documents the creation of the charity by Craig Kielburger in 1995 and its effort to build schools in Kenya, before presenting allegations of financial impropriety and criminality.

The podcast was described as one of the best Canadian podcasts of 2021 in The Globe and Mail and by CBC Radio. It is hosted by Olusola Adeogun.

Production[edit]

The podcast was produced by Jesse Brown of Canadaland and was released in five parts,[1] in August 20, 2021 to September 13, 2021.[2] It is narrated by Olusola Adeogun.[3]

Synopsis[edit]

The White Saviors documents the history of the WE Charity, that was launched in 1995 by Craig Kielburger, and its effort to build schools in Kenya.[4] It includes dozens of interviews with former WE Charity employees.[1] It explores the involvement of many Canadian school children in WE Days and the Free the Children school-based fundraising initiatives, and presents financial concerns as well as questioning the accuracy of WE Charity's reports on their overseas work.[3]

The podcast also includes allegations of criminality and deceit,[4] including allegations that Theresa Kielburger (the mother of WE Charity founders Craig Kielburger and Marc Kielburger) diverted donations into a family owned bank account.[5] In response to the podcast, Theresa Kielburger launched a $3 million defamation lawsuit in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in November 2021.[5][6]

Responses[edit]

Gabrielle Drolet identified the podcast in The Globe and Mail as one of the five best Canadian podcasts of 2021 and described it as "addictive".[4] CBC Radio also described the podcast of one of the "best podcasts of 2021".[7] John D McLennan M.D. writing in the Journal of the Canadian Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry described it as provocative and occasionally disturbing, and "well worth a listen".[3]
