Yellow of the Egg (YOTE) is a language and linguistics podcast on topics related to German,[1][2][3][4] such as language learning, pronunciation, gender representation, orthography, German dialects, language attitudes and identity, law and language, and queer linguistics.

The podcast itself is in English. Launched in 2021 with the aim to "explore German language and linguistics, and make it accessible to a wide audience",[5] the podcast has hosted guests such as language teachers, applied linguists, phoneticians, dialectologists, sociolinguists and secondary school students. The voices and commentary featured on the podcast reflect an open science approach to knowledge dissemination about language phenomena for all levels of society.

The podcast is hosted by Luke Green, a language teacher and linguist based in Vienna, Austria.[6]

Name[edit]

The name "Yellow of the Egg" is taken from a play on words on the German expression "My English is not the yellow of the egg", translating the German phrase "das Gelbe vom Ei" literally into English.[7]

Background[edit]

Green graduated from Canterbury Christ Church University with a bachelor in music in 2013. He graduated from the University of Vienna in 2020, where he studied English and German and received two awards for extraordinary academic achievement. In 2017 he co-founded the Austrian Association for Legal Linguistics and is co-editor of an edited volume on contemporary approaches in legal linguistics.[8] Green has also authored or co-authored various publications and reviews on topics such as phonetics and phonology,[9] language teaching,[10] legal translation,[11] and multillingualism in the European Union.[12]

Episodes[edit]

The podcast episodes are released fortnightly, every other Tuesday, and are grouped into series. The podcast is recorded in Vienna, Austria. It has featured music by Euphoniques, a band whose music style has been described as consisting of modern neo soul melodies, R&B grooves and pop music.[13]
