Third Shift Society is a supernatural webcomic published on WEBTOON and created by artist Meredith Moriarty. It follows Ellie, a woman deep in debt, as she takes on a job as a paranormal detective.[1]
Publication
Moriarty began work on Third Shift Society in late 2015, but the idea first came to her in 2011.[2] The first episode of Third Shift Society was published as a WEBTOON Original on September 19, 2019. On March 19, 2020, the comic began a hiatus following its season one finale. As of June 2021, the comic has amassed over 373,000 subscribers.[3]
Plot and themes
Ellie McGuinness is a recent college graduate[2] who is unemployed, deep in debt, and on the verge of eviction.[4] She meets Ichabod, a paranormal detective with a pumpkin for a head, as he is in the middle of fighting a monster and needs help.[5][6] After saving Ichabod, Ellie discovers she has paranormal abilities of her own and is offered a job as Ichabod's partner.[4][5][7]
Themes of Third Shift Society include coming of age, debt, and success.
Character list
- Ellie McGuinness is an ordinary girl who gets caught up in the supernatural after a chance meeting with Ichabod. She was unemployed, swimming in debt, and out of options. She also has supernatural powers of her own.[7][8]
- Ichabod is a paranormal investigator who joins forces with Ellie. His most notable feature is his Jack O' Lantern head, though there is mystery surrounding why he looks this way.[9]
- Dr. Simon Strauss is a medical doctor and vampire who assists Ichabod when he suffers an injury on the job.
- Katherine is a librarian who helps Ichabod and Ellie with supernatural research on cases.
- Oberon is a demon who loops Ellie into his plans to destroy Alice's barrier spell.
- Alice is a mysterious supernatural entity that visits Ellie in a dream. She is the creator of a barrier spell meant to keep dangerous beings at bay.
Awards
Third Shift Society was nominated for the Eisner Award for Best Webcomic in 2020,[10][11] though Fried Rice Comic by Erica Eng was ultimately the recipient.[12][13]
