Plot and themes[edit]
Yuna and Kawachan is an apocalyptic action drama set in Japan after a cataclysmic event that introduces monsters into the world.[3] It follows the survival of Yuna, a high school student, and Kawachan, a person living in a mascot costume.[4]The story is built around their struggle for survival but also their interactions with other survivors and the mystery behind the monsters that have appeared in Japan.[5] The series often takes on the tone of a slice of life story while highlighting the nostalgia for the world before the monsters and deals with themes of trust, survival, friendship, and loss.[6][5][7]
The plot begins with Yuna and Kawachan surviving alone in their home town after most of the population has disappeared or been evacuated. After a dangerous encounter with another survivor, they decide to leave and pursue their own rescue rather than wait for the evacuation effort to return to their home. Their journey leads them to encountering another group of survivors and becoming embroiled in their inner politics and desperation to survive. Yuna and Kawachan must adjust to surviving in a group rather than looking out for solely themselves and tension begins to build amidst the distrust and the revelations about the monsters' true nature.[5]
Major characters[edit]
The following characters are central to plot lines in the comic and make regular appearances:
- Yuna is the protagonist of the story and a high school student who survived the initial stages of the apocalypse by getting lost in the sewers. She is a capable survivor that has learned to defend herself by surviving alone with Kawachan. She holds out hope that her family is still alive and that the world can return to normal but often finds her optimism slipping in the face of harsher realities. She is determined, fierce, optimistic, loyal, and stubborn.[3][5]
- Kawachan is the secondary lead and Yuna's closest ally in the apocalypse. They are a person that refuses to take off the mascot costume they found at the outbreak of the apocalypse because they see it as a suit of armor that keeps them safe from the trauma of their past and the outside world. They refuse to speak but are very emotive and are capable of communicating easily with Yuna who understands their gestures. They are portrayed as loyal, goofy, strong, and determined to protect Yuna at all costs.[3][5]
- Itsumi is a nursing student that Yuna and Kawachan encounter that helps them recover from the injuries they sustained while traveling. She ends up becoming a part of their group after an incident forces them to flee together. She is portrayed as caring, motherly, independent, and realistic.
- Junichiro is a survivor that tried to rob Yuna and Kawachan and was left for dead in their home town because of it. They encounter him later in their travels and he accidentally falls in with them. He is deceptive, realistic, and out for himself but seems to show some growth after his initial encounter with the pair.
- Kaito is Itsumi's cousin and the leader of a survivor group living at a farm. He is a hard headed and determiner leader that will do whatever it takes to keep his group safe. He makes decisions quickly and takes any threats to his community's well being very seriously.
