Thmanyah (Arabic: ثَمانِية), a Saudi media company based in Riyadh. The company was founded in 2016 by Abdulrahman Abdumalih, and it’s distinguished for its concept of storytelling journalism. In 2017, Saudi creative film producer Aseel Baabdullah became a co-founder of Thmanyah, and the duo started producing films that represent the culture and people of the Arab world. Today, Thmanyah publishes three forms of media: podcasts, articles, and documentaries.[1]

Prior to founding Thmanyah, Abumalih launched Finjan videos on YouTube, which soon moved to its audio version on many podcast platforms. Later on, the company invested in creating many podcasts establishing a consistent audience. Arab News described Thmanyah as “A Saudi venture refines art of storytelling for new media age.”[2]

Programs[edit]

Thmanyah distributes nine podcasts, all hosted by Thmanyah staff. It is the most popular in the Arab World.[3]

  • Fnjan is an interview weekly podcast about arts, culture, politics, and society, hosted by thmanyah’s founder, Abdulrahman Abdmalih.
  • Things That Changed Us is a short-run narrative podcast on elements that changed Saudi culture and people. Hosted by thmanyah’s award-winning producer Mazen Al Otabibi.
  • Socrates an interview weekly podcast investigating the effects of Vision2030 policies in practice, hosted by Thmanyah’s critic Omar Al Jeraisi.
  • Arba’a a weekly podcast, hosted by Alwaleed Aleesa, exploring provocative ideas in a short time.
  • Aswat is a monthly narrative podcast documenting Arab life.
  • The Second Pillar is a short-run dialogue podcast on the world behind the economy.
  • The Company is a narrative podcast on how “thmanyah” started and it’s everyday challenges.
  • Barq an interview podcast on tech news, hosted by the Independent editor Abdullah Al Sabe.
  • Tamas an interview podcast discussing sports, hosted by Omar Al Aqeel.

Films[edit]

Thmanyah has a channel on both Youtube and Vimeo where it has been publishing films regularly for more than two years. All of which are accompanied by articles on their website and English subtitles. The themes cover topics around culture, society, and politics, all presented in the form of a story. The channel has over 150K subscribers and over 10M views as of 23 November 2020. Thmanyah collaborated with Khalid Al Yahya to release a monthly graphic series, called "Asmar with Khalid Al Yahya". It also partnered with many governmental and private organizations in many projects that helped produce Malcolm X documentary and Edward Said.[4]
