Thomas Chen

Thomas Chen (Chinese: 陈曾焘) is an businessman and co-founder of the Hang Lung Group in Hong Kong.[1] He is known for his contributions to the education system on Hong Kong.[2]

Life[edit]

Thomas Chen was born in 1924 in Hong Kong and went to the mainland China to study during the Anti-Japanese War where he graduated from the National Fudan University. In 1948, he returned to Hong Kong where he founded Hang Lung Group together with his brother Chen Zengxi.[3]

He has served as director, managing director and chairman of the group. He was a non-executive director of Wing Lung Bank from 1985 to 2003. In 1997, he established Siyuan Foundation. He also served as the vice president of the Real Estate Developers Association which is a member of the Airport Authority Hong Kong. In addition he served in Real Estate Group of the Land Construction Advisory Committee and Preparatory Working Group of the Land Development Company.[4]

He also served as a director of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and he was also Chairman of Hong Kong Securities Clearing Company Limited. He also holds the position of director in the Hong Kong UniversityTeaching and Research Development Fund Co., Ltd., which is a part of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Advisory Committee.[5]

Recognition[edit]

He was awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1993.[6] He received the Honorary Doctorate of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1995 and the Honorary Fellow of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2004. He was also awarded the Honorary University Fellow of the University of Hong Kong in 2006 and the Honorary Fellow of the Fudan University Ph.D. in 2012.[7]
