Thomas Lockley

Thomas Lockley is an author of narrative history books and faculty member at Nihon University College of Law in Tokyo.

His first book, 信長と弥助―本能寺を生き延びた黒人侍 (Nobunaga and Yasuke: The Black Samurai who survived the Honnoji incident) which was published by Ohta Publishing[1] in January 2017. It was originally written in English, but translated into Japanese for publication by Fuji Yoshiko.

Lockley's second book with Geoffrey Girard, African Samurai: The True Story of Yasuke, A Legendary Black Warrior in Feudal Japan, was featured as one of the 10 most eagerly anticipated history books of 2018 by Publishers Weekly[2] and is to be published in the US by Hanover Square Press,[3] in April 2019. The same book it is to be published in the UK under the name Yasuke: The true story of a legendary African Samurai by Little, Brown Book Group[4] in May 2019.

Both books investigate the life of the African samurai Yasuke, who served the Japanese warlord Oda Nobunaga in 1581-82.

Thomas Lockley has also published academic papers in the field of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), his academic field.
