Tiakümzük Aier (born 1 April 1984) is a Naga film director. He made his directorial debut with the 2012 Ao-language christian film Life Rewind and the 2014 The Wake-Up Call.[2] He further achieved success with his 2017 film Nana - A Tale of Us.
Life and career[edit]
Tiakümzük Aier was born on 1 April 1984 in Tuensang, Nagaland to an Ao Naga father from Sungratsu village of Mokokchung District and a Chang Naga mother from Tuensang. He spent most of his childhood in Tuensang as his mother was posted there. He also did his high-school from Tuensang.[3][4]
He has directed several plays including Needles and Pins – a contemporary play about the political, economic and social status of Nagaland, Father’s Letter – a play about family, its values and responsibility as a father and a son, Edge of Life – a play on drug abuse, Beyond the Valley – an evolve play on women empowerment, Sanitation (Swacch Bharat) and Identity. He also directed the short film Lichaba's Daughter.[1]
Aier directed the 2017 drama film Nana - A Tale of Us, starring Zhokhoi Chüzho and Mengu Suokhrie. Upon release, Nana - A Tale of Us received widespread critical acclaim with critics calling it one of the finest films to come out of India that year.[5]
As of 2019, Aier announced that another film is planned.[3]
Awards[edit]
In 2017, Tiakümzük Aier was awarded The Golden Calton Best Director 2017 for the film Nana - A Tale of Us at The Edinburgh Festival of Indian Films and Documentaries (EFIFD). He was the first Naga Film Director to win such an award.[6]
