Tibber AS [1] is a smart home automation and electricity supplier based in Førde, Norway. The company operates in the Norwegian, Swedish and German energy market via the Tibber App [2]. Founded in 2016, both founders are still active in the company, with Edgeir Vårdal Aksnes acting as the company's CEO and Daniel Lindén assuming the role of Chief Product Officer.

History

Both employed in the energy utility sector, founders-to-be Daniel Lindén [3] and Edgeir Vårdal Aksnes [4] initially met in 2013. Direct competitors at the time, Daniel and Edgeir faced off bidding for the same project. Later, the two found themselves working at the same company and, after a series of events, decided to leave to pursue their own venture in 2015.

Founded in February 2016, Tibber AS first launched its energy operations in Norway in February 2017, with Sweden following later the same year. In March 2019, Tibber announced 40,000 paying subscribers and their entry into the German market. Previously, the company had also indicated expansion plans into Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands, and others.

During their Series B funding round in 2020, the company revealed they had 100,000 paying customers across all markets.[5]

Product

Tibber's business model is to resell renewable energy at wholesale prices for a fixed monthly fee. To support their vision of reducing customers' energy consumption, the app can provide real-time analytics into energy usage and connect to smart home devices. After a partnership with the Norwegian EV charging company Easee [6], the product later extended to support smart home hubs and open APIs for developer access.

For this, their online Tibber Store [7] launched in 2018, carrying both third-party products and products developed in-house. The store now contributes a significant part of the company’s turnover.

Today, Tibber is certified for bidding in the on-demand electricity markets of both Norway and Sweden. The company uses EV charging stations to balance peaks in unusually high or low electricity-demand times through its smart charging feature.

Finance

As a privately financed firm, Tibber initially bootstrapped its operations until its first capital injection by Petter Stordalen’s Strawberry group in February 2017. Since then, the company has received capital injections by the Strawberry group, venture capitalist firm Wellstreet, Norwegian research fund RFF Vest, Norwegian energy supplier BKK, and Silicon Valley.[8]

Up until 2019, investments in Tibber were estimated at a total US$16.5 Million, at an undisclosed valuation on Crunchbase [9]. In early 2019, Tibber was the subject of capital investment by Founders Fund, their third ever investment in Europe.

One year later, in 2020 they closed their Series B funding round with a US$65M deal. The investments mainly came from Eight Roads Ventures and Balderton Capital, with participation from Founders Fund.

Business model

Tibber operates as a digital energy provider offering electricity contracts based on dynamic pricing. Instead of fixed-rate tariffs, customers are billed according to real-time electricity prices on energy exchanges, in addition to applicable taxes and fees.

The company provides a mobile application that allows users to:

  • Monitor real-time electricity prices
  • Analyze consumption patterns
  • Automate energy usage during lower-cost periods
  • Integrate smart devices such as electric vehicles and home storage systems

This model is designed to encourage consumption during periods of lower demand or higher renewable energy availability.

Operations in Germany

Tibber operates in the German energy market, where its activities are led by Managing Director Merlin Lauenburg.

Under his leadership, the company has contributed to initiatives related to smart meter adoption and flexible electricity consumption. Tibber has participated in industry collaborations alongside companies such as Octopus Energy, Rabot Charge, Ostrom, and 1KOMMA5°, focusing on the expansion of smart metering infrastructure and dynamic pricing models.

Industry context

Tibber operates within the broader European energy transition, where digitalization and flexible consumption are increasingly emphasized. Dynamic pricing models are considered a tool for balancing electricity demand with renewable energy supply.

The company’s approach aligns with trends in smart grid development, decentralized energy systems, and demand-side management.

Media coverage

Tibber and its leadership have been featured in various media outlets and industry discussions related to energy pricing, smart meters, and electricity market reform.

Notable coverage includes:

  • Discussions on dynamic electricity tariffs and consumer pricing models
  • Reporting on smart meter rollout initiatives in Germany
  • Analysis of electricity pricing and regulatory developments in European energy markets
