Tik Tok (Chinese: 抖音短视频; pinyin: Dǒuyīn duǎn shìpín; literally "vibrate short video") is a music video platform and social network[1] launched in September 2016[2] by Zhang Yiming, the founder of Toutiao.[3] It enables users to choose music as a background for 15 seconds of their own short video. Tik Tok can include shaking and shivering in time to hip-hop, electronic music. The number of its daily active users reached 66 million in February 2018.[4] There were some controversies caused by Tik Tock users violating the app's rules.[5]
History[edit]
Tik Tok was launched on 26 September 2016 by Zhang Yiming.[1] In January 2017, it received several million RMB of seed investment from the Toutiao Group.[6] In September 2017, it started to expand into the Indonesian market.[7] Tik Tok's parent company ByteDance purchased Musical.ly, a North American music short video social platform, for 1 billion USD in November 2017 and would merged it with Tik Tok.[8] On 23 January 2018, the app ranked No.1 among free mobile app downloads on App stores in Thailand.[9] In February 2018, Tik Tok launched the partnership with Modern Sky to monetize music.[10]
