This is a timeline of the war in Donbas for the year 2022.

January–March[edit]

  • 1 January: The law "On the foundations of national resistance" came into force in Ukraine. It established a number of measures dealing with civilian mobilization and resistance in the case of external aggression. The leading role of the movement would be carried out by the commander of the Special Operations Forces.[1] A Ukrainian soldier, injured on 27 December 2021, died of wounds at a military hospital in Kharkiv.[2]
  • 8 January: The Ukrainian Joint Forces press center reported six pro-Russian violations of the ceasefire, one of them an unauthorized drone flight over Ukrainian positions. One Ukrainian soldier was wounded in action. In the eastern area of operations, Pisky became the target of 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles and 82 mm mortars. Novomykhailivka was hit by heavy machine gun fire, automatic grenade launchers and 82 mm mortars. Ukrainian troops at Bohdanivka were harassed with small arms fire. In the northern front, Ukrainian redoubts at Stanytsia Luhanska were hit by VOG-17 grenades fired from a pro-Russian drone. Small arms fire was reported at Krymske.[3][4]
  • 10 January: The Ukrainian Joint Forces press center recorded two pro-Russian attacks on their positions, both of them in the area of Pisky, in the eastern front. Two Ukrainian servicemen died after the explosion of landmines while on a mission within the buffer zone. Pisky received fire from small arms, heavy machine guns and 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles.[5][6] According to ANNA News, pro-Russian sources from Donetsk city told the press that Vesele became the target of small arms, heavy machine guns and 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles.[7] Local officials recorded seven Ukrainian violations of the truce inside the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. Pro-Russian troops at Zolote-5, Lozove, Krasny Yar, Zholobok, Sokolniki and Molodezhne were fired at from small arms, different grenade-launcher systems and 82 mm mortars.[8]
  • 11 January: One Ukrainian soldier was killed while fighting pro-Russian forces.[9] A single pro-Russian attack on Ukrainian troops was reported by the press center of the Ukrainian Joint Forces, when Ukrainian redoubts at Novotoshkivke, in the northern area of operations, were hit by small arms and heavy machine gun fire.[10]
  • 12 January: The press center of the Ukrainian Joint Forces recorded three pro-Russian violations of the truce; one Ukrainian soldier was wounded in action. In the eastern area of operations, Prichepilivka became the target of anti-tank rocket launchers and 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles on two occasions. In the northern front, 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Novozvanivka.[11] Pro-Russian officials from Donetsk city told the press that the Ukrainian army broke the ceasefire on five occasions. The Ukrainian military fired infantry weapons and different grenade-launcher systems at pro-Russian forces near Bayrak, in the area of Horlivka, Oleksandrivka, in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and Nova Tavryia, Pikuzy and Sakhanka in the region of Mariupol.[12] Authorities from the self-styled Luhansk people's Republic reported that Ukrainian troops shelled the village of Donetskyi with 120 mm mortars. A farm and a residential building were damaged.[13]
  • 13 January: Pro-Russian sources from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported three Ukrainian attacks on their positions throughout the day. The villages of Donetskyi and Molodezhne received small arms fire, heavy machine guns, grenade launchers and 120 mm volleys. Ukrainian BMP-2 armoured vehicles from Krymske, supported by 120 mm mortars, engaged pro-Russian redoubts at Zholobok. Nearby Krasnyi Yar became the target of small arms and automatic grenade launchers.[14]
  • 14 January: Authorities from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic reported 20 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire during the past week. According to DNR spokesman Eduard Basurin, the Ukrainian army used small arms, heavy machine guns, different grenade-launcher systems and 82 mm mortars.[15] Officials from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic told the press that Ukrainian forces from Novotoshkivke fired an 82 mm mortar barrage to pro-Russian positions at Donetskyi;[16] one pro-Russian soldier was killed.[17] Pro-Russian troops returned fire, and claimed to have killed one Ukrainian servicemen and wounded two others.[16] The same sources said that the Ukrainian army broke the ceasefire on 18 occasions over the past week; Zolote-5, Donetskyi, Kalinove, Molodezhne, Lozove, Kalinivka, Zholobok, Sokolniki and Krasny Yar came under attack.[18]
  • 22 January: The Ukrainian Joint Forces press center reported four pro-Russian violations of the ceasefire, all of them in the eastern area of operations. One Ukrainian soldier was wounded in action. The village of Maisk was shelled twice with automatic grenade launchers. Vodiane became the target of anti-tank rocket launchers and 82 mm mortars; later in the day, a pro-Russian drone launched a strike on Ukrainian positions by firing a VOG-17 rocket.[19] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic denounced that a pro-Russian soldier was "abducted" by Ukrainian troops while checking for suspicious activities in a wooden area near Svitlodarsk.[20]
  • 23 January: According to the press center of the Ukrainian Joint Forces, pro-Russian forces launched ten attacks on their positions along the demarcation line. One Ukrainian soldier was wounded in action. In the eastern area of operations, the stronghold of Vodiane was hit by the combined fire of 82 mm and 120 mm mortars, as well as different types of grenades and rockets. In Prichepilivka, Ukrainian positions were pounded by heavy machine gun fire and anti-tank rockets. In the northern front, Novozvanivka was hit by a 122 mm artillery barrage, while Ukrainian redoubts at Popasna became the target of heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers and 120 mm mortars. Ukrainian troops at Katerinivka were harassed with small arms fire and different types of grenades and rockets.[21]
  • 25 January: The press center of the Ukrainian Joint Forces recorded five pro-Russian violations of the truce; two Ukrainian soldiers was wounded in action, one of them seriously. Ukrainian forces returned fire. All the incidents took place in the eastern area of operations. Ukrainian redoubts at Pyshchevik were hit by a drone strike with VOG-17 rockets. Avdiivka received fire from heavy machine guns and 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles. Marinka was hit by small arms fire and antitank rockets, while Ukrainian troops at Shyrokyne were harassed with small arms and heavy machine gun fire.[22][23] Officials from the self-styled Donetsk People's Republic recorded seven Ukrainian attacks on their positions. The Ukrainian army fired different grenade-launcher systems at Hornyak, Spartak, Trudivske, Novoshirokivske and Starohnativka.[24]
  • 27 January: The Ukrainian Joint Forces press center reported two pro-Russian violations of the ceasefire. In the eastern area of operations, Ukrainian troops at Marinka were harassed with small arms fire. In the northern front, Ukrainian forces fend off a pro-Russian attempt to infiltrate a special forces group through the demarcation line.[25] Sources from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic told the press that the village of Veselohorivka received 73 mm antitank recoilless rifle and heavy machine gun fire from Ukrainian positions at Troitske; one pro-Russian soldier was killed. Pro-Russian forces fired back.[26]
  • 1 February: A pro-Russian soldier was killed after a Ukrainian drone strike near the village of Sosnovske, in the region of Mariupol, according to authorities of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic. The drone was launched from Ukrainian positions at Pavlopil. Hours later, Sosnovske itself was hit by anti-tank rockets.[27] The same sources recorded a combined rocket and 82 mm mortar attack on Pikuzy from Ukrainian positions at Talakivka.[28]
  • 2 February: The press center of the Ukrainian Joint Forces recorded four pro-Russian violations of the truce; a Ukrainian soldier was wounded in action. The incidents took place in the eastern area of operations.[29] A Ukrainian checkpoint at Hnutove was the subject of a drone strike; a VOG-17 grenade exploded besides the outpost.[30] Ukrainian positions at Vodiane came under fire from heavy machine guns, anti-tank rocket launchers and 82 mm mortars. Talakivka was shelled with automatic grenade launchers and anti-tank rocket launchers, while Vodiane was hit by anti-tank rockets.[29]
  • 5 February: The Ukrainian Joint Forces press center reported six pro-Russian violations of the ceasefire; two Ukrainian soldiers were wounded. All the incidents occurred in the eastern area of operations. Pro-Russian forces launched an attack with two drones on the Ukrainian stronghold of Pavlopil; the unmanned aircraft fired four VOG-17 grenades at downtown, hitting a school building. Ukrainian troops at Pyshchevyk received fire from anti-tank rocket launchers, automatic grenade launchers and small arms. The village of Berezove was attacked with automatic grenade launchers and small arms; small arms fire was also reported at Pisky.[31] Pro-Russian sources from Donetsk denounced six Ukrainian attacks on their military positions. Ukrainian forces fired diferent grenade-launcher systems and 120 mm mortars at Novoshyrokivske and Sosnovskoye, in the region of Mariupol, and, in the outskirts of Donetsk city, at Spartak and Donetsk itself. A garage and several civilian vehicles were damaged.[32]
  • 8 February: According to the press center of the Ukrainian Joint Forces, pro-Russian forces launched three attacks on their positions along the demarcation line, two of them in the eastern area of operations. Nevelske became the target of a drone strike; the uncrewed aircraft fired a VOG-17 grenade at Ukrainan positions. Pisky was hit by anti-tank rockets. In the northern front, Ukrainian troops at Svitlodarsk received fire from small arms and anti-tank rocket launchers.[33] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic said a Ukrainian "Leleka-100" drone that had departed from Popasna was neutralized and brought down by electronic countermeasures, using the local-developed system "Triton-M1". The aircraft was about to direct mortar fire over the area of Kalynove-Borshchevate.[34]
  • 10 February: The Ukrainian Joint Forces press center reported eight pro-Russian violations of the ceasefire. In the eastern area of operations, Taramchuk was hit by three VOG-17 grenades fired by a pro-Russian drone. Pisky, meanwhile, became the target of different grenade-launcher systems. Ukrainian troops at Hranitne were harassed with heavy machine guns, and small arms fire was reported at nearby Vodiane. In the northern front, Zaitseve received fire from infantry weapons, automatic grenade launchers and anti-tank rocket launchers. Positions at Popasna were hit by small arms and heavy machine gun fire.[35] A Ukrainian drone carrying an improvised explosive device was shot down over Vesele.[36]
  • 14 February: Soldiers of Ukrainian army killed two civillians and injured others. Most of the victims were from the ethnic Greek community in Hranitne[37]
  • 15 February: In Moscow, the State Duma approved a motion to ask President Vladimir Putin the recognition of the independence of the separatist republics in Ukraine, with 351 positive votes, 16 negatives and one abstention.[38] According to the press center of the Ukrainian Joint Forces, pro-Russian forces launched four attacks on their positions along the demarcation line, all of them in the northern front. The village of Katerynivka was hit by anti-tank guided missiles. Orikhove was shelled with anti-tank rocket launchers and 120 mm mortars; Stanytsia Luhanska received fire from 82 mm mortars. Lobacheve became the target of anti-tank rockets.[39] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported that a Russian volunteer soldier was killed at Holubivske by sniper fire from Ukrainian positions around Orikhove.[40] Pro-Russian forces returned fire using artillery.[41]
  • 16 February: The main federal investigation agency of Russia, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, claimed to have seen evidence of "unmarked mass graves" in the Donbass region containing the remains of "thousands of Russian-speaking civilians" killed by Ukrainian forces. They also accused the Ukrainian army of indiscriminate use of lethal weaponry and the shelling of residential areas. Experts said the reports were "propaganda to justify agression".[42]
  • 17 February: The Ukrainian Joint Forces press center reported to the press that pro-Russian forces had broken the ceasefire on 60 occasions,[43] most of them involving the use of heavy artillery and mortars. In the main incidents in the northern front, residential areas of Stanytsia Luhanska were hit by thirty-two 122 mm artillery rounds. Most of the city was left without power, while a kindergarten was damaged and three civilians were wounded. Novotoshkivke was shelled three times with anti-tank rocket launchers, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm artillery. Pro-Russian tanks opened fire on Ukrainian redoubts at Troitske, supported by 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. Luhansk became the target of 120 mm mortars and 122 mm heavy artillery. In the eastern area of operations, a 152 mm artillery barrage hit Prichepilivka, while antitank guided missiles were fired at Novoselivka. Avdiivka and Nevelske received fire from 120 mm mortars.[44][45] Two Ukrainian soldiers were wounded in action.[46] Authorities from the pro-Russian republics denounced an escalation in the number of Ukrainian army attacks on their positions. Sources from Donetsk city said that Ukrainian forces fired small arms, automatic grenade launchers, anti-tank recoilless rifles and 82 mm mortars at pro-Russian positions around Horlivka and Donetsk city. In the main incidents, Trudivske came under the combined fire of small arms, automatic grenade launchers and anti-tank recoilless rifles: 82 mm mortar volleys landed meanwhile in Novomykhailivka, Gagarin mining complex and Izotove. Ukrainian BMP-1 armoured vehicles opened fire on pro-Russian redoubts at Sokolniki, supported by automatic grenade launchers and anti-tank recoilless rifles. Lozove received fire from 120 mm mortars.[47] Local officials recorded four Ukrainian violations of the truce within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. Zolote-5, Sokolniki, Veselenke, and Nizhnie Lozove received fire from Ukrainian positions. Nearby Donetskyi was hit by mortar fire.[48]
  • 18 February: The leader of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, Denis Pushilin, announced a massive evacuation of civilians to Rostov Oblast, Russia, amid the deteriorating security situation in the region.[49] A similar operation was also announced by the head of the self-styled Luhansk People Republic, Leonid Pasechnik.[50] According to the press center of the Ukrainian Joint Forces, pro-Russian forces launched 66 attacks on their positions along the demarcation line, 52 of them involving the use of weapons banned by the Minsk agreements.[51] At about 19 pm 18 February near the building of the government of the Donetsk People's Republic an explosion thundered. Later it became known that the car of the head of the People's Militia had been blown up. Eduard Basurin, a representative of the People's Militia of the DPR, said that the Ukrainian security forces tried three times to carry out sabotage in the Donbass.[52] On the same day in Luhansk there was a powerful explosion on the gas pipeline. According to the general director of LUGANSKGAZ, Ukrainian sabotage was the cause of the explosions.[53]
  • 19 February: The leaders of the breakaway republics in Donbass declared general mobilisation.[54] The Russian Federal Security Service announced that a shell had hit the territory of the Rostov region, a kilometer from the Russian-Ukrainian border.[55] According to the Russian news agency TASS, the Joint Ceasefire Control and Coordination Center reported that Ukrainian armed forces fired 200 munitions during their bombardments of the territory of the DPR, employing heavy artillery guns, which are prohibited by the Minsk agreements.[56] By evening, the Ukrainian Joint Forces press center reported 136 pro-Russian violations of the ceasefire, 116 of them using weapons banned by the Minsk agreements. Two Ukrainian soldiers were killed by separatist artillery fire and four others were wounded.[57] In the main incidents, in the eastern front, Marinka came under fire four times, being the target of 120 mm mortars and anti-tank guided missiles. Novotroitske was pounded on six different occasions with automatic grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm artillery. Starohnativka was shelled four times with 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, 122 mm and 152 mm artillery. Novohnativka received fire on three occasions from 120 mm mortars and 122 mm artillery. In the northern front, pro-Russian tanks engaged Ukrainian positions around Stanytsia Luhanska four times, supported by 120 mm mortars and 122 mm artillery. Krymske was the subject of five attacks using heavy machine guns, anti-tank rocket launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm artillery. Shchastya was the target, on five occasions, of heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers and 82 mm mortars. Zaitseve received fire three times from 120 mm mortars and 152 mm artillery.[58]
  • 20 February: The Ukrainian Joint Forces reported 80 pro-Russian attacks on their positions, 72 of them involving weapons banned by the Minsk agreements.[59] Authorities from the self-declared Luhansk People's Republic reported that Ukrainian forces attempting to cross the demarcation line through the Seversky-Donets river with artillery support were pushed back by pro-Russian troops. Two civilian residents were killed and five buildings were destroyed in the village of Pionerske.[60][61] By evening, Ukrainian forces had broken the ceasefire on 66 occasions, hitting 24 settlements within the boundaries of the breakaway republic. At Prishib, a civilian resident was wounded and a building was destroyed when the village was hit by 120 mm mortar fire; other two civilians were wounded in Znamenka, where two houses were damaged.[62] DNR spokesman Eduard Basurin reported that more than 700 shells had been fired by Ukrainian forces at pro-Russian positions, "including 450 shells of the 122 mm calibers and 120 mm and 82 mm mines."[63] A total of seven settlements came under fire.[64]
