This is a timeline of the War in Donbass, from 1 January 2019 through 28 February 2019. The timeline follows an ongoing conflict between Ukraine and anti-government pro-Russian separatists supported by Russian troops in the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine.

January

1 January

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 4 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including once in Donetsk region and on 3 occasions in Luhansk region); the fire was returned once. By morning of 1 January one ceasefire violation was registered, at Hnutove, where 82 mm mortar rounds landed at around 25 km NE from Mariupol; no casualties were reported on the Ukrainian side. The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence confirmed at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on the last day of December. No violations of the ceasefire were reported by pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city on New Year's Eve. Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic recorded three Ukrainian violations of the truce within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military used small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers and 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles to attack pro-Russian forces at Slovianoserbsk, Smile and Lozove.

The press-centre of the Joint Forces Operation (JFO) reported in the evening that by 6:00 pm the second ceasefire violation had taken place, at Novotoshkivske (at around 52 km WNW from Luhansk), where positions of Ukrainian troops were engaged by pro-Russian BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles from Donetskyi; one Ukrainian serviceman was killed in action. By the end of the day total 3 ceasefire violations were registered, that brought the total number of casualties on the first day of 2019 to one Ukrainian soldier killed and two others wounded. Besides Novotoshkivke, Vilnyi was the other location in the northern sector of the demarcation line attacked by pro-Russian forces. The village became the target of small arms and automatic grenade launchers. In the region of Mariupol, Hnutove was hit by 82 mm mortar fire. Pro-Russian officials from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic reported that Ukrainian forces had broken the ceasefire at Dokuchaievsk, where pro-Russian positions became the target of heavy machine gun fire by evening.

2 January

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning, that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 3 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including once in Donetsk region (at Pikuzy) and twice in Luhansk region (at Novotoshkivske and at Vilnyi (ESE part of Zolote, 48°40′59″N 38°33′2″E

)); the fire was returned on several occasions. By noon of 2 January no ceasefire violations were registered. The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence confirmed at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and two others were wounded in action in the Donbass region on the first day of January. Pro-Russian officials recorded one Ukrainian violation of the ceasefire, when Ukrainian troops fired heavy machine guns at Dokuchaievsk. The same sources reported that pro-Russian forces captured one Ukrainian serviceman after members of the Ukrainian 128th Mountain Assault Brigade attempted to break through the demarcation line in the region of Mariupol. The prisoner was suffering from hypothermia. The incidents took place on 29 December 2018, and two Ukrainian soldiers died, according to the separatists, when their group stepped onto a Ukrainian minefield. Ukrainian military sources confirmed that one of their soldiers went missing on that date. Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic said that pro-Russian troops at Zolote were harassed with small arms fire.

According to the information provided by the press-centre of the JFO in the evening, from midnight until 6:00 pm pro-Russian military had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 4 occasions. By the end of the day total 5 ceasefire violations were registered, with no casualties on the Ukrainian side. In the outskirts of Donetsk city and in the region of Mariupol, Vodiane became the target of small arms, heavy machine guns and anti-tank rocket launchers. Ukrainian troops at Opytne were harassed with heavy machine gun fire. Sniper fire was reported meanwhile at Pisky. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, Vilnyi was shelled with automatic grenade laucnhers, while small arms fire was reported at Luhanske.

3 January

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 5 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 3 occasions in Donetsk region and twice in Luhansk region); the fire was returned once. By noon of 3 January no ceasefire violations were registered. The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region 2 January. According to pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city, no active Ukrainian violations of the truce were recorded over the past 24 hours. No hostile incidents were either reported by pro-Russian authorities from the Luhansk People's Republic.

The press-centre of the JFO reported in the evening that from midnight by 6:00 pm pro-Russian military had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops once, using grenade launchers of different systems at Vilnyi, that is about 60 km NW from Luhansk city. By the end of the day total 3 ceasefire violations were registered, all of them in the northern section of the demarcation line. One Ukrainian serviceman was wounded. Pro-Russian forces opened fire repeatedly on Ukrainian positions at Vilnyi using infantry weapons, automatic grenade launchers and anti-tank rocket launchers. Nearby Zaitseve became the target of the same kind of weapons. A number of Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire were recorded by pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city by evening. The industrial area of Volvo Center, west of Donetsk city, became the target of 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles. In the area of Horlivka, Zaitseve was shelled with automatic grenade launchers, while Pikuzy, in the region of Mariupol, came under fire from 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles.

4 January

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning, that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 3 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day, all that occurred in Luhansk region (twice at Vilnyi and once at Zaitseve). By noon of 4 January no ceasefire violations were registered. The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence confirmed at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in action in the Donbass region on 3 January. Pro-Russian officials recorded three Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. Ukrainian forces opened fire on three locations with small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers and 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles. The same sources recorded 26 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire over the past week. The Ukrainian military fired four rounds from 82 mm and 120 mm mortars, and also attacked pro-Russian positions with armoured fighting vehicles. Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic recorded two Ukrainian violations of the truce within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military used heavy machine guns and 120 mm mortars to attack pro-Russian forces at Sokolniki and Mykhailivka.

Pro-Russian officials from Donetsk city told the press that Ukrainian forces had broken the ceasefire on several occasions by evening. Kruta Balka, Volvo Center, Dokuchaievsk, Zhabicheve and Staromykhailivka, in the surroundings of Donetsk city, and Gagarin mining complex, in the area of Horlivka, came under hostile fire. Most incidents involved the use of small arms and heavy machine guns. Zhabicheve and the industrial area of Volvo Center became the target of 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles.

5 January

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 3 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day, twice at Vodiane in Donetsk region and once at Vilnyi in Luhansk region; the fire was returned on several occasions. By noon of 5 January one ceasefire violation was registered near Pavlopil with no casualties on the Ukrainian side. The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 4 January. Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported six Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in six locations using small arms, heavy machine guns and 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles. Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic recorded two Ukrainian violations of the truce within the republic boundaries. Ukrainian forces used small arms, heavy machine guns and under-barrels launched grenades to harass pro-Russian positions at Kalynivka and Zholobok.

The press-centre of the JFO reported in the evening that by 6:00 pm pro-Russian military had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 3 occasions, at Lebedynske using heavy machine guns and anti-tank rocket launchers, and in the area of Avdiivka, where Ukrainian troops received fire from infantry weapons and automatic grenade launchers. In addition Pavlopil was the target of heavy machine guns before noon. By the end of the day total 4 ceasefire violations were registered, Vodiane being the fourth location, where Ukrainian positions were shelled with 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles; no casualties were reported. Pro-Russian officials from Donetsk city told the press that Ukrainian forces had broken the ceasefire on several occasions by evening. Zhabicheve and Vasylivka, in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and Sakhanka, in the region of Mariupol, came under attack. Most incidents involved the use of infantry weapons. Sakhanka was shelled with automatic grenade launchers and Zhabicheve received fire from 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles.

6 January

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning, that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 4 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day, exclusively in Donetsk region.); the fire was returned on several occasions. By noon of 6 January no ceasefire violations were registered. The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 5 January. Pro-Russian officials recorded four Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. Ukrainian forces opened fire on three different locations using small arms, heavy machine guns, snipers, automatic grenade launchers and 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles. Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic recorded three Ukrainian violations of the truce within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military used small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers and 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles to attack pro-Russian forces at Kalynivka and Lozove.

According to the information provided by the press-centre of the JFO in the evening, no ceasefire violations were registered during the first 18 hours of 6 January. By the end of the day total 5 ceasefire violations were registered, with no casualties on the Ukrainian side. In the outskirts of Donetsk city and in the region of Mariupol, intense heavy machine gun fire was reported at Krasnohorivka, while Ukrainian troops at Novomykhailivka were harassed with infantry weapons, under-barrel launched grenades and rocket launchers. Hnutove and Marinka became the target of small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers and anti-tank rocket launchers. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, Ukrainian troops at Vilnyi were fired at with heavy machine guns and automatic grenade launchers from pro-Russian positions at Zolote. A number of Ukrainian violations of the truce was recorded by pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city. Trudivske, in the western environs of Donetsk city, Zaitseve and coal mine 6/7, in the area of Horlivka, and Sakhanka, in the region of Mariupol, came under hostile fire. Most incidents involved the use of infantry weapons. Zaitseve was hit by anti-tank rockets.

7 January

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 5 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 4 occasions in Donetsk region and once in Luhansk region); the fire was returned on several occasions. By morning of 7 January (as of 10:00 am) one ceasefire violation was registered, at Pavlopil, at around 8:20 am, with no casualties on the Ukrainian side. The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region 6 January. Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported five Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in four locations using small arms, heavy machine guns and anti-tank rocket launchers. In the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, local officials recorded one Ukrainian violations of the truce, when pro-Russian troops at Zolote were harassed with small arms and heavy machine gun fire.

In the outskirts of Donetsk city and in the region of Mariupol, Berezove and Pavlopil became the target of automatic grenade launchers; in the case of Pavlopil, Ukrainian troops were also harassed with heavy machien gun fire. In the northern section of the demarcation line, anti-tank rockets hit the Ukrainian strongholds of Vilnyi and Luhanske; the later position also became the target of small arms. A number of ceasefire violations were reported by pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city by evening. Ukrainian forces attacked pro-Russian positions at Trudivske, in the outskirts of Donetsk city, Gagarin mining complex, in the area of Horlivka, and Uzhivka, in the region of Mariupol. In the main incidents, Gagarin mining complex was shelled with automatic grenade launchers, while Uzhivka received fire from 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles.

8 January

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning, that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 5 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (twice in Donetsk region and on 3 occasions in Luhansk region)); the fire was returned on several occasions. By noon of 8 January no ceasefire violations were registered. The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence confirmed at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in the Donbass region on 7 January. Pro-Russian officials recorded five Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. Ukrainian forces opened fire on four locations with small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers and 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles. Local sources from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic recorded three Ukrainian violations of the truce within the republic boundaries. BMP-1 armoured vehicles from Luhanske launched an attack on Ukrainian redoubts at Kalynivka. The same positions became later the target of heavy machine guns. Small arms fire was reported at Knyaz Igor memorial.

According to the information provided by the press-centre of the JFO in the evening, by 6:00 pm pro-Russian military had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops once, when their positions near the village of Novotoshkivske (at about 55 km WNW from Luhansk city) were targeted from grenade launchers of various systems and small arms, with no casualties on the Ukrainian side. By the end of the day no more ceasefire violations were registered by the Ukrainian side. Pro-Russian authorities from Donetsk city told the press that Ukrainian forces had broken the ceasefire on a number of occasions by evening. Hostile incidents were reported at Trudivske, in the outskirts of Donetsk city, Dolomitne, and Gagarin mining complex, in the area of Horlivka, and, in the region of Mariupol, Sakhanka and Yasne. All incidents involved the use of infantry weapons and automatic grenade launchers. Sakhanka was hit by automatically launched grenades, while sniper fire was reported at Gagarin.

9 January

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian positions the previous day on one occasion — at Novotoshkivske, at around 3:00 pm, for about 20 minutes; the fire was returned. By noon of 9 January one ceasefire violation was registered at Novomykhailivka — that occurred at around 11:00 am and lasted also for about 20 minutes. The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region 8 January. Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported five Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in five locations using small arms, heavy machine guns, sniper rifles, automatic grenade launchers and 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles. Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported three Ukrainian violations of the truce within the republic borders. Zholobok was hit by 82 mm mortar volleys fired from Krymske, while anti-tank rockets landed in Donetskyi. Small arms fire was meanwhile registered at Pervomaisk.

The press-centre of the JFO reported in the evening that no further ceasefire violations were registered by 6:00 pm except for the one that took place at around 11:00 am at Novomykhailivka (at about 40 km SW from the centre of Donetsk city). By the end of the day the second ceasefire violation was registered — at Lebedynske, that lasted for about 40 minutes, no casualties were reported. A number of Ukrainian violations of the truce was recorded by pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city. Abakumove, Dokuchaievsk and Volvo Center, in the outskirts of Donetsk city, 6/7 coal mine in the area of Horlivka, and Sakhanka, in the region of Mariupol, came under hostile fire. All the incidents involved the use of small arms, heavy machine guns and anti-tank rockets.

10 January

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning, that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 2 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day, exclusively in Donetsk region; the fire was returned. By noon of 10 January one ceasefire violation was registered, where 82 mm mortars and machine guns were employed to target Ukrainian positions at Zhovte — the fire started at around 7:00 am and lasted for longer than an hour. The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 9 January. Pro-Russian officials recorded five Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. Ukrainian forces opened fire on five locations with small arms, heavy machine guns and anti-tank rocket launchers. Local sources from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic recorded three Ukrainian violatons of the truce within the republic borders. Infantry weapons were used to harass Ukrainian troops at Molodizhne, while 82 mm mortar volleys landed in Zolote and Zholobok.

According to the information provided by the press-centre of the JFO in the evening, by 6:00 pm pro-Russian military had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 2 more occasions, at Vodiane and at Pavlopil, with no casualties on the Ukrainian side. Vodiane was targeted by automatic grenade launchers and rocket propelled grenades, while Pavlopil was attacked with infantry weapons and 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles. No further ceasefire violations were registered by the end of the day. A series of Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire were reported by pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city. Kruta Balka, Volvo Center, in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and, in the area of Horlivka, Gagarin mining complex and 6/7 coal mine were targeted by Ukrainian forces. In the main incidents, 6/7 coal mine was shelled with automatic grenade launchers and 82 mm mortars, while BMP-1 armoured vehicles from Kamianka engaged pro-Russian positions at Kruta Balka. Three workers from the Donbass water supply service were wounded while removing snow at a supply station near Donetsk city, when the truck they were riding on was fired at from BMP-1 armoured vehicles and 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles.

11 January

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 3 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (twice in Donetsk region and once in Luhansk region); the fire was returned on several occasions. By morning of 11 January (as of 10:00 am) two ceasefire violations were registered — Vodiane came under fire from automatic grenade launchers and rocket launchers for about 15 minutes at around 8:10 am, Hnutove was targeted by heavy machine guns at 8:52 am for about 40 minutes onwards; one Ukrainian soldier was wounded. The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region 10 January. Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city reported eight Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in five locations using small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles. Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic recorded four Ukrainian violations of the truce within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military used small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, anti-tank rocket launchers and 120 mm mortars to attack pro-Russian forces at Kalynivka, Kalynove, Kalynove-Borshchevate and Donetskyi.

The press-centre of the JFO reported in the evening that Ukrainian positions at Hnutove had been targeted for the second time by 6:00 pm, heavy machine gun and rocket propelled grenades attacks on Ukrainian positions at Novomykhailivka and Lebedynske increased the number of registered ceasefire violations to five by 6:00 pm. By the end of the day grenade launchers of various systems and large-calibre machine guns were employed to target Ukrainian positions at Kriakivka (for about 15 minutes, starting from 10:35 pm), Lebedynske was attacked for the second time at around 4:35 pm, that brought the number of registered ceasefire violations to 7 by the end of the day; another Ukrainian serviceman was wounded. Pro-Russian officials from Donetsk city told the press that Ukrainian forces had broken the ceasefire on several occasions by evening. Kruta Balka, Zhabicheve, Yasynuvata, Volvo Center and Trudivske, in the environs of Donetsk city, Shyroka Balka, in the area of Horlivka, and, in the region of Mariupol, Sakhanka and Uzhivka came under hostile fire. In the main incidents, Ukrainian tanks from Vodiane launched a sustained attack on pro-Russian redoubts at Uzhivka, while BMP-1 armoured vehicles from Kamianka opened intense fire on pro-Russian positions at Kruta Balka, supported by automatic grenade launchers. Shyroka Balka was shelled with automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles and 82 mm mortars; 82 mm mortars also landed in Zhabicheve and Volvo Center. According to the same sources, the action at Uzhivka was the first time in where Ukrainian forces used tanks in combat this year.

12 January

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning, that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 7 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 6 occasions in Donetsk region and once in Luhansk region)); the fire was returned on all occasions. By noon of 12 January no ceasefire violations were registered. The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence confirmed at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 11 January. Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported 12 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in nine locations using small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks. Sources from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic recorded four Ukrainian violations of the truce within the republic boundaries. Ukrainian forces used 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and BMP-1 armoured vehicles to engage pro-Russian positions at Lohvynove, Zholobok and Sentianivka.

According to the information provided by the press-centre of the JFO in the evening, as of 6:00 pm 3 ceasefire violations by pro-Russian military were registered — 82 mm mortars were employed to target positions of Ukrainian troops at Zhovte, in the northern sector of the demarcation line. Ukrainian positions at Vodiane and Pavlopil in the Mariupol area received fire from grenade launchers of different systems, heavy machine guns and small arms. Also in the north, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles opened fire on Ukrainian positions at Novotoshkivke, while Vilnyi received fire from automatic grenade launchers. No further ceasefire violations and no casualties were reported by the end of the day. A series of Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire were recorded by pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city by evening. Volvo Center, Trudivske, Dokuchaievsk and Spartak, in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and Zaitseve, in the area of Horlivka, came under attack. Most incidents involved the use of infantry weapons. Trudivske and Volvo Center received fire from 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles.

13 January

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 3 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day — Ukrainian positions at Vilnyi and Novotoshkivske in Luhansk region and in the area of Avdiivka in Donetsk region were fired at from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm; the fire was returned on all occasions. By noon of 13 January one ceasefire violation was registered at Krasnohorivka with no casualties on the Ukrainian side. The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass on 12 January. Pro-Russian officials recorded seven Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in four locations. Ukrainian forces opened fire on three different locations using small arms and 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles. Local sources from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic recorded two Ukrainian violations of the truce within the republic boundaries. BMP-1 armoured vehicles from Novotoshkivke engaged pro-Russian positions at Donetskyi supported by 82 mm mortar fire, while automatic grenade launchers were fired at Kalynove.

The press-centre of the JFO reported in the evening that by 6:00 pm pro-Russian military had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 10 occasions, one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded. By the end of the day total 14 ceasefire violations were registered with no further casualties on the Ukrainian side. In the outskirts of Donetsk city and in the region of Mariupol, Pisky was shelled with 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles.
