Timmion Records is an independent record label, recording studio, and vinyl press based in Helsinki, Finland. Specializing in soul and funk music, Timmion came to prominence in the 2010s for their retro-soul and rare groove releases of Finnish, American, and British artists.

History[edit]

Timmion Records was founded by Sami Kantelinen| and Jukka Sarapää in 2000 as a vehicle to release music by their soul band, The Soul Investigators. The Soul Investigators functioned as the label's house band for many years and were succeeded by the production team Cold Diamond & Mink in the mid-2010s.[1][2]

Over the past two decade they have been successful at promoting their music to a global fan base and became a fixture in the soul and funk blogosphere in the 2010s.[3][4][5] Timmion has a well-documented history with some of New York's seminal soul revival labels including Daptone Records, Soul Fire, and Big Crown.[6] In 2019, Daptone compiled the album Bad Education, Vol. 1: Soul Hits of Timmion Records.[7][8][9]

In addition to The Soul Investigators, Timmion Records has released music from Brooklyn-born Nicole Willis, New Orleans singer Willie West, California soul duo Myron & E,[10] Big Joe Louis, Herb Johnson, The Soul Ladas, and Guest Villains, among others.[11] They have also reissued vintage American soul records.[1] In 2006, the Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators song "Feeling Free" was awarded Track of the Year at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards. Willie West's track ”I’m Still A Man” was heavily featured in the 2016 Jim Jarmusch film Paterson.[12]

In 2009, the Timmion Cutting Laboratory was opened to cut vinyl records in-house.[11][13] They are the only contemporary vinyl pressing plant in Finland.[14]
