Xmperial Global is a Kingston-based, Jamaica independent record label, founded in 2019 by Jamaican record producer and entrepreneur Tay Cunningham, commonly known as J-Thug. The label operates across a range of genres, from Reggae and dancehall to afro-pop, rap, hip hop, electronic music, EDM and leftfield pop. Xmperial Global has released music by MD Kindred, Kxng Tyler, Jolie, Astronaut Nuke, and Abaze, among others.
History
Xmperial Global was started by producer and musician J-Thug in 2019 as a multi-genre label encompassing music from across the world. The label's early years saw releases spanning from reggae, dancehall, pop, hip hop, afro-pop, and more.
In 2021, Xmperial Global released its first full-length album: Utmost to The Highest by MD Kindred, featuring the singles “My God”, “Good Loving”, and “Take A While”. The album reached thousands of fans on Spotify and Vevo and also received coverage in outlets such as Dancehall Arena and the Hot Press.[1][2]
Subsequent releases on Xmperial struck a balance between dancehall riddims and releases from emerging afro-pop, hip hop, pop and EDM artists such as Jolie, Astronaut Nuke, and Kahpun.
In 2019, Xmperial began working with Kxng Tyler, then protégé MD Kindred, and subsequently signed him to Xmperial Global with an album deal. On January 15, 2021, Xmperial released MD Kindred’s debut album, Utmost to The Highest. The release was uploaded on audiomack and trended at number one reggae album for the week on the platform, spawning the singles “My God” and “Good Loving”. The album received critical acclaim across radio stations in the U.S., UK and Caribbean.[3] In 2020, Xmperial Global acquired the exclusive rights to market and distribute releases through 5050 Music Group label and UMG-Ingrooves, whose artists included Young M.A and Kelly Rowland, a decision that ultimately put the label at the center of the 21st Trap Dancehall controversy.[4][5][6]
Artists who have recorded for Xmperial Global include MD Kindred, Kxng Tyler, Cappa Flex, Jolie, Abaze, Kahpun.
