Tomas Fiala (born May 13, 1974, in Brno) is the CEO of the Ukrainian investment company "Dragon Capital."[1][2]

From 2016 to 2020, Dragon Capital, together with its international partners, invested over $600 million in real estate. One of Fiala's investment partners in the company is the fund of American financier George Soros, Soros Fund Management.[3][4]

In 2015, Fiala's capital was valued at $187.9 million by Focus magazine ($145.2 million in 2013). He ranked 78th among the richest people in Ukraine in 2013.[5][6]

Biography[edit]

Fiala was born in the eastern Czech city of Brno, where he completed secondary school. In his later years of school, he started working as a translator. At that time, German companies began relocating their production to former Czechoslovakia. Tomáš took on the task of translating documentation for the newly established Czech Volkswagen plant.[7]

In 1989, at the age of 15, Tomáš went to Prague and took part in the "Velvet Revolution." He refers to Václav Havel as the moral leader of the Czech Republic.[8]

After completing his first year of university, Tomáš got a job at the Prague branch of the German bank "Bayerische Vereinsbank," working as an analyst in the credit department. Within a few months, he switched to working as an analyst at the investment company "Wood & Company" and then moved to Kyiv within a year.

2000: Founded and became the CEO of the investment company Dragon Capital, with offices in Ukraine and Cyprus

2014: Founded "NV" and the news website and Radio NV

Fiala, together with oligarch Viktor Pinchuk, sponsored the project "New Leaders." Tomáš does not invest in state-controlled sectors or state-owned companies to avoid dependence on officials.

Since 2009, Fiala's organizations have exclusively invested in companies where they have a controlling stake.

He served as the President of the European Business Association from 2016 to 2021 and was a member of the board of Transparency International Ukraine from 2016 to 2020. He is the owner of the "Center for Economic Strategy," VoxUkraine, and VoxCheck.[9]

Media[edit]

In May 2014, Fiala founded the Russian-language weekly socio-political publication "Novoe Vremya" (later renamed "NV") and the news website and Radio NV in June. Initially, Fiala planned to acquire the publication Korrespondent (owned by former oligarch Serhiy Kurchenko's UMH), but he later created a new publication. As obtaining a broadcasting license was a challenging task, Fiala purchased Radio Era, relocated the studio to a new place, and built up the entire team from scratch. According to Tomáš, he does not influence the editorial policy of the publication, which is managed by Vitalii Sych and Valeriy Kalnysh.[10][11]
