Tomasz Marcin Kania is a Polish mathematician specializing in functional analysis and operator theory. He has a habilitation degree in mathematical sciences and is particularly interested in Banach spaces, Banach algebras, set theory, general topology, and probability theory. Kania is currently a professor at the Institute of Mathematics at Jagiellonian University and a researcher at the Institute of Mathematics at the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague.
Biography
Education
Kania graduated from Walerian Łukasiński High School in Dąbrowa Górnicza[1]. He earned his master's degree in mathematics from the University of Silesia in Katowice in 2010 with a thesis titled "Applications of Martin's Axiom" under the supervision of Aleksander Błaszczyk. In 2013, Kania obtained his Ph.D. from Lancaster University, where he defended his dissertation, "Closed ideals of operators acting on Banach spaces of continuous functions," under the guidance of Niels J. Laustsen[2]. He received his habilitation in 2020 from Jagiellonian University based on his research achievements and publication titled "Surjective Images and Ideals of Banach Algebras, with Particular Focus on Operator Algebras on Banach Spaces". In 2021, Kania obtained a master's degree in computer science from the University of Economics in Katowice, where he defended his thesis, "Methods of Topological Data Analysis in Decision Theory," under the supervision of Tomasz Wachowicz.
Professional career
Kania gained his first professional experience at Lancaster University, where he worked as an assistant between 2010 and 2013 and as a lecturer during the 2014/2015 academic year. In the meantime, from January to September 2014, he worked as an adjunct at the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In 2015, he taught at University College Cork and later worked as a research associate at the Institute of Mathematics of the University of Warwick until the end of the 2016/2017 academic year. Since 2017, Kania has been conducting research in the Department of Abstract Analysis at the Institute of Mathematics of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague.
