Yuri Valentinovich Trubnikov (Russian: Юрий Валентинович Трубников; March 18, 1946 – April 27, 2025) was a Belarusian mathematician, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, professor, and specialist in functional analysis and function theory. He was known for his contributions to nonsmooth analysis, operator equations with accretive nonlinearities, approximation theory, and differential equations. For more than two decades, he worked at Vitebsk State University named after P. M. Masherov, where he founded a scientific school in nonlinear functional analysis. He authored several monographs and over 300 scientific publications.
Biography
Yuri Trubnikov was born on March 18, 1946, in Tashkent, Uzbek SSR, in a family of employees. After graduating from secondary school, he entered the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics at Voronezh State University, where he studied mathematics and graduated in 1969. That same year he began working at the Department of Ordinary Differential Equations at Voronezh State University, under the supervision of Professor A. I. Perov.
In 1973, he entered graduate school at Voronezh State University and, on December 3, 1974, defended his candidate thesis on Monotone Differential Equations (specialty 01.01.02 – differential and integral equations). The main results were published in the journal Differential Equations. After his defense, he was invited to serve as a reviewer for Mathematical Reviews (USA) and became a permanent reviewer from 1975 onward, joining the American Mathematical Society.
In 1980, Trubnikov moved to Belarus and began teaching at the Vitebsk Technological Institute of Light Industry (later Vitebsk State Technological University), where he was awarded the academic title of associate professor in 1982. In 1986, he became head of the Department of Higher Mathematics and held this position until 1998. From 1998 to 2001, he worked as an associate professor at the Department of Theoretical and Applied Mathematics at Vitebsk State Technological University.
In 2001, he was invited by rector A. V. Rusetsky to Vitebsk State University named after P. M. Masherov (VSU). In 2004, he defended his doctoral dissertation at Belarusian State University on Extremal Constructions in Nonsmooth Analysis and Operator Equations with Accretive Nonlinearities. From 2004 to 2006, he served as dean of the Faculty of Physics at VSU, later as professor at the Department of General and Theoretical Physics (2006–2008), and head of the Department of Theoretical Physics (2008–2014). In 2012, he was awarded the academic title of professor.
From 2015 to 2022, Trubnikov worked at the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Technologies as professor of the Department of Geometry and Mathematical Analysis. In 2022, he became professor of the Department of Engineering Physics at VSU, where he worked until his death.
Yuri Valentinovich Trubnikov died on April 27, 2025, in Vitebsk, Belarus, at the age of 79. He is survived by his wife (also a mathematician), three children – Igor (PhD in mathematics), Anastasia (mathematician, IT specialist), and Yulia (economist) – and five grandchildren.
Scientific work
Trubnikov’s research interests included functional analysis, approximation theory, complex dynamical systems, and differential equations. He authored over 300 scientific, methodological, and review papers, as well as four monographs (two written with his students). His doctoral work contributed to the development of nonsmooth analysis and operator equations with accretive nonlinearities.
He led research projects under the State Program of Scientific Research of Belarus for about 15 years. Under his supervision, two PhD students defended their dissertations: A. M. Voronov and Sun Baiyu (China). Trubnikov was the founder and head of the scientific-pedagogical school “Nonlinear Functional Analysis” at VSU. He also participated regularly in conferences, including the annual Masherov Readings in Vitebsk.
Since the 1970s, he contributed as a reviewer for Mathematical Reviews (AMS) and collaborated with Zentralblatt MATH. He was a long-time member of the American Mathematical Society.
Teaching and administration
For more than fifty years, Trubnikov was active in higher education, first in Voronezh and later in Vitebsk. At the Vitebsk Technological Institute he built the Department of Higher Mathematics, modernized curricula, and developed new courses. At VSU he served as dean of the Faculty of Physics (2004–2006) and head of the Department of Theoretical Physics (2008–2014). He lectured on mathematical analysis, differential equations, functional analysis, and other courses, training several generations of mathematicians and physicists.
Colleagues and students noted his depth of knowledge and clear, accessible teaching style. He described himself as not overly strict but always striving to be objective in assessment.

He fostered a collegial atmosphere at his university departments and remained actively engaged in science and teaching until his final years.
