Tomato salad (Italian: Insalata pomodoro or simply insalata) is a basic Italian salad, made of sliced tomatoes, red onion, and basil, seasoned with salt, oregano and extra virgin olive oil, paired with hot chili pepper. A common dish from Calabria in southern Italy, usually eaten in the summer months when tomatoes are most ripe. Most often it is paired with a crusty Italian bread.
Variants
The salad is completely customizable; variants may include ingredients such as herbs, proteins, and balsamic vinegar. Among the most popular of variants is the Insalata Caprese and Panzanella (Bread and Tomato Salad).
