Tommy the Fox is a 2014 cartoon series created by Stephen Storti on DeviantArt. It is a spin-off of Storti's main series, Ethan, Nathan, Larry & Elmer. The series follows Tommy, a 9-year-old anthropomorphic fox having adventures with his friends, Harry the Cat, Bob the Beaver and Debbie the Fox and his brother, Rudy.

The series takes place in Oakland National Park, a fictional forest city located in the fictional island, Oakland[1], which is based off of the Sequoia National Park and is four hours away to Leadwood, a fictional city, which is based off of Los Angeles. There is also another fictional city, Cucumber City, which is based off of Sacramento.

Despite the series being on DeviantArt, it is most known for two shorts uploaded on YouTube titled "Tommy the Fox Bladder problem animated short" (June 7, 2016)[2] and "Tommy the Fox Bladder Problem PART 2" (November 12, 2023),[3] with the former having over 10 million views and the latter having over 100,000 views, as of 2025.

Production, development and changes

In 2014, Storti created the character and released a concept of him on 22 May 2014,[4] thus starting the series. Afterwards, more characters would be created for the series. Out of all the characters created in Tommy the Fox, Tommy's family had gotten the most changes. Tommy originally had a line on his shirt, as shown in his sketch concept,[4] until it was removed, though he still sported his wristwatch.[5] In 2016, he and his family would go from having white fur and black ears to tan fur and orange ears. In 2017, Tommy and Rudy would gain brown hair instead of orange,[6] which is now their current appearance. Two additional members were added in 2024, who are two adopted baby otters named Aubree and Layla.[7]

The characters would also have their ages dropped. For example, Tommy was 13 years old from 2014 to 2019[8], before finally being dropped down to being 9 years old and has remained this age since.[9]

As well as this, the series originally took place in Maple Falls, until it was changed to being at the Oakland National Park.[1]

Animated shorts

"Bladder Problem" (both parts)

The series is most known for two animated shorts, which are the two and only parts of "Bladder Problem".[2][3] The first part was made as an animated personal project for Exceptional Minds[15] and was released on June 7, 2016.[2] The first part was the only part ever made, but people had wanted a sequel to it, leading to a retcon. Seven years later, Storti would make the second part and upload it on November 12, 2023.[3]

Synopsis

Part 1 opens with Tommy drinking a can of soda, before throwing it away in a recycling bin. During the drive to presumably home, Tommy starts to feel like needing to use a bathroom, which happens after five minutes after trying to easily hold it in. His mother decides to stop at a gas station, which is 10 minutes away and tells him not to think about waterfalls. After breaking the fourth wall by threatening to pop a thought cloud then again by popping it when he sees his thoughts about a waterfall, he notices billboards with water, to which he says "Uh, too late", indicating he had urinated his pants. However, the second part retcons this with the family stopping at a traffic jam, with different billboards, he ends up deciding to use a bottle to relieve himself. After arriving home, the family gets out of the car and back in the house, except for Rudy, who was sleeping. After waking up, he mistakes Tommy's urine for apple juice and drinks it, only to get a disgusted reaction, ending part 2.

Reception

"Bladder Problem" was met with a mix of both praise and criticism, via comments on both videos. However, said comments cannot be viewed, due to them being turned off. Some people liked its animation and humor and found it entertaining, whilst others were disgusted, described it as a "barely disguised fetish" and criticized the animation of the first part, which had gotten better during the making of part 2.

"Tommy the Fox Tries to Bake a Cake"

A third animated short, titled "Tommy the Fox Tries to Bake a Cake" (Titled with "Make" instead of "Bake" in the video) was released on May 22, 2023, though it is currently an animatic.[16]

Synopsis

From the animatic, Tommy is seen watching a cooking show about making a cake, giving him an idea of making one with the help of his friends, Bob, Harry and Debbie. Rudy decides to help too, but Tommy is reluctant of this at first. However, he changes his mind and lets Rudy assist with making the cake. Soon, they all start to bake the cake and do it in a fashion of a cooking show. Rudy is then left with adding the yeast, to which he is supposed to add in a little, but ends up adding to much, causing the cake to grow big. He then tells the others about what he did and they soon notice the growing cake in the kitchen and it explodes all over them (except for Harry, who had ran out of the house just in time) and everyone is now covered in a cake-filled mess. The short ends with Tommy telling the audience something, though due to no voice recordings present in the entire video, it's unknown what is being said.
