Trans Day of Vengeance
The Trans Radical Activist Network (TRAN) planned to demonstrate outside the US Supreme Court in Washington on Saturday April 1, 2023 in response to perceived “astronomical amounts of hate” directed at the trans community.
The group said it would be protesting against a wave of proposed legislation to be introduced across the US.
Twitter had banned images of the poster for a “Trans Day of Vengeance” rally amid concerns it may incite “violence” in the wake of a mass shooting that occurred in Nashville, TN on March 27, 2023. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) congressional Twitter account was suspended for a week after she condemned calls for a “Trans Day Of Vengeance” made before the Nashville school attack by a 28-year-old transgender shooter / mass murderer.
The decision to go ahead with the rally was criticized by some following the shooting attack at a private Presbyterian Christian primary school located in Nashville, TN on Monday March 27, 2023, when a female transgender ex-student gunned down and killed three staff and three students.[1][2][3][4]
On Wednesday March 29, 2023 Ella Irwin, head of trust and safety at Twitter, indicated in a tweet that the company automatically removed upwards of 5,000 tweets and retweets of a poster promoting the event. “Vengeance means fighting back with vehemence,” the protest’s organizers wrote on their website.[5]
On March 31, 2023 Newsweek reported the "Trans Day of Vengeance" canceled. Less than a day after vowing to go ahead with the rally in Washington D.C. advocating for transgender rights, a group of organizations that had been planning the event canceled it over a "credible threat to life and safety." The TRAN, a collection of transgender activist groups, had previously noted that it had received threats, which it was reporting to the police. The collective suggested it had become the target of blame for the private Presbyterian Christian primary school shooting on Monday March 27, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. Screenshots of messages that had been sent to TRAN since the school shooting show that the group had been called a "terrorist" outfit, or said that transgender and gay people "should be slaughtered" and that those organizing the group should "off yourself." Posts included "Good job fueling hate. Now kids are dead," one anonymous user told the group. Another accused them of having "inspired the murder of children."[6]
