Trans Formations Project
Background
The Trans Formations Project is a grassroots 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization founded in Florida, United States that works to track LGBTQ legislation around the United States and educate the public on current queer political issues and protecting the rights of LGBTQ+ citizens.
Founder Alexander Petrovnia [1] began the project with the initiative to create a data repository of how politicians vote on transgender rights issues and trans legislation. The database [2] provided on the organization’s website is one of the only databases to effectively compile information about both pro- and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation at both state and national levels as well as how politicians of all levels vote on such issues.
In an interview with Cheddar News, Petrovnia explains the organization’s mission:
“What we’re trying to do is get people to contact their representatives, to actually push
back against these bills, to organize protests, to take notice and report on these issues
so that more people are aware of them”[3]
The official social media pages of the Trans Formations Project frequently post updates on legislation across the United States affecting the queer community.
Current LGBTQ+ Issues
Starting around the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the United States has seen a wave in anti-trans legislation threatening the rights of transgender and non-binary citizens. Laws being introduced propose issues that can limit transgender youth from accessing gender-affirming medical care, gender-affirming bathroom access, participation on sports teams, and transgender and queer representation.[4]
Transgender individuals are also at an increased risk for homelessness, violence, mental illness and suicide than their cisgender peers.[5]
