Transit is a feature on Apple Maps that provides public transportation directions and real-time transit information for supported locations. Launched in September 2015, the future has expanded from an initial grouping of cities in North America, Europe and Asia to various cities and countries across the world.

    Background

Apple Maps in iOS 6 has a significant drawback: it omits transit directions, a feature that was previously available and highly valued by users who rely on public transportation. This decision stems from Apple’s switch to TomTom, a mapping service that doesn't provide transit data. While the new Maps app offers turn-by-turn navigation for drivers, its lack of transit directions makes it less practical for commuters in cities with extensive public transport systems.

In contrast, Google Maps provides comprehensive route information for public transit, including details about the type of transit, departure and arrival times, and walking directions. The absence of integrated transit directions in Apple Maps forces users to rely on third-party apps, which can be a fragmented and inconvenient experience. Although Apple Maps does suggest a list of transit apps, finding and downloading the appropriate one can be cumbersome, and the information provided is often incomplete.[1][2]

    Overview

Apple Maps Transit enables users to:

    • View public transportation routes (buses, trains, subways, trams)
    • Access schedule information for transit services
    • Plan multi-modal journeys combining walking, transit, and other modes

    History

Transit was first announced at the 2015 World Wide Developers Conference.[3][4] The feature was released on September 12, 2015, in cities such as Baltimore, Berlin, London, Mexico City, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Toronto, Washington DC, and about thirty other Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen.[5]

A month later, in October, the feature was expanded to Boston and Sydney.[6][7]

In December, transit was released in Los Angeles.[8]

In 2016, transit continued to expand in many cities. In March, the feature was launched in Austin.[9] The following month, in April, it became available in Montreal, Portland, and Seattle.[10][11][12] In May, Rio de Janeiro, just before the 2016 Olympics, and Sacramento joined the list of serviced cities.[13][14] June saw the arrival of transit in Miami, Atlanta, and Denver, while the United Kingdom received nationwide coverage.[15][16] In July, Honolulu, Kansas City, San Diego, and Prague were added, and British Columbia also received transit.[17][18][19] August marked the arrival of transit in Dallas and San Antonio.[20] In September, Columbus, Pittsburgh, and São Paulo joined the serviced cities.[21][22]In October, Melbourne received transit, and Japan obtained nationwide coverage.[23][24] Finally, in December, Minneapolis-Saint Paul and Salt Lake City received transit.[25]

In 2017, Apple expanded its transit feature to several new cities. In January, Houston was the first to benefit from it.[26] The following month, in February, New Orleans, Detroit, and Windsor joined the list.[27][28] Paris received the feature in April, followed by Singapore and the Netherlands in May.[29][30][31] In June, the feature was added to Madrid.[32] July saw the addition of Calgary, Las Vegas, Henderson, Carson City, and Reno-Sparks.[33][34] In August, Brisbane, Perth, Ottawa, Edmonton, and Quebec City were included, along with Hungary.[35][36][37] In October, Taiwan, Ireland, and Arizona received the feature.[38][39][40] Finally, in December, Tampa was the last city to obtain it.[41]

In 2018, the feature expanded across the U.S. In January, Wisconsin and Nebraska were the first to welcome it.[42] The following month, in February, it was South Carolina.[43] In March, New Mexico, Virginia, as well as Orlando and St. Louis joined the list.[44][45][46] April saw the addition of Dayton, Toledo, Akron, Little Rock, Frederick, and Charleston.[47]Tennessee also benefited from the feature that month.[48] In June, North Carolina, Estonia, Buffalo, and Rome were added.[49][50][51] In August, Luxembourg, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, and Vermont joined the group.[52][53] September marked the expansion of the feature to Alaska, Wyoming, Idaho, Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington, the United Kingdom, and Canada.[54][55] In October, Switzerland was added.[56] Finally, in November, Belgium was the last to join the list.[57]

In 2019, Apple completed coverage of all U.S. states. In January, Australia, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland received the transit feature.[58][59] In February, transit was expanded to Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, North Dakota, New York, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota, and Texas.[60] Finally, in September, the feature was rolled out to Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Montana, Utah, New Zealand, and Manila.[61]

Starting in 2020, the pace of deployments slowed, focusing on nationwide coverage. In February, transit was extended to France, Spain, and Germany.[62] In June, Hong Kong received the feature.[63] In July, Iceland obtained it.[64] In September, Lisbon received transit.[65] In October, the feature was deployed in Italy.[66] Finally, in November, Austria gained access to transit.[67]

In 2022, Apple continued the expansion of the feature in October in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.[68] In December, transit was released in Israel.[69]

In 2023, transit expanded in April to Croatia, Poland, and Slovenia.[70] In October, the feature was released in Greece and Dubai.[71]

In 2025, Thailand, Monaco, Liechtenstein, and Malaysia received the feature in May.[72][73][74] In October, Portugal and Puerto Rico obtained transit.[75]

In 2026, Latvia and Lithuania gained access to transit starting in January.[76]
