Tropical Storm Karl was a tropical storm that affected Southern Mexico in mid-October 2022. The eleventh named storm of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season, Karl originated in the Bay of Campeche from an area of disturbed weather that was north of dissipating Hurricane Julia. After attaining peak winds of 60 mph (95 km/h), it weakened rapidly and dissipated without making landfall. The storm damaged buildings and infrastructure in four states and caused three deaths.
Meteorological history[edit]
On October 10, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) began to monitor an area of disturbed weather located north of dissipating Tropical Storm Julia.[1] The low later moved over the Bay of Campeche, where conditions were conducive for further development.[2] There it became organized and rapidly strengthened into Tropical Storm Karl at 21:00 UTC on October 11.[3] A Hurricane Hunters mission into the storm the following morning found that Karl's sustained winds had increased to 60 mph (95 km/h) as it moved slowly northward.[4] However, increased wind shear began to weaken the storm early on October 13, and it stalled over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.[5] Nonetheless, Karl's central pressure began to fall slightly after it began moving south-southeastward as the day progressed.[6] Moderate northwesterly shear and drier mid-level air continued to inhibit Karl from strengthening on October 14, as it moved toward the coast of southern Mexico. Satellite images that morning showed that the dense overcast around the storm's low-level center had become more symmetric overnight, with its heavy thunderstorms concentrated to the southeast of the center.[7] By that afternoon, the dry air and wind shear had taken their toll, snuffing out Karl's last burst of deep convection, after which it weakened to a tropical depression, and then deteriorated into a remnant low at 09:00 UTC on October 15.[8]
Preparations and impact[edit]
When Karl formed, the NHC issued tropical storm watches from Tuxpan to Frontera.[9] The following day, those watches were upgraded to warning for Alvarado to Ciudad del Carmen.[10] The National Meteorological Service of Mexico alerted people living in then soon-to-be affected areas to heed warnings issued by the governments.[11] In Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, a shelter was set up in anticipation of Karl.[12]
Karl caused significant flooding and many landslides in southern Mexico, mostly in: Tabasco, Chiapas, Veracruz, and Oaxaca.[13][14][15] Additionally, three storm related fatalities were reported in Chiapas: one in Pichucalco Municipality and two in Juárez Municipality.[16] One person was rescued after a landslide injured them outside Tapalapa. Fast moving water destroyed many bridges in Ostuacán, forcing the evacuation of over 35 families. Elsewhere, a stream overflowed, resulting in flooding of 5 neighborhoods with water as deep as 10 ft (3 m) in some flooded areas; 120 people needed rescuing. One person was rescued from rough seas in Puerto Arista. Precautionary evacuations were also carried out in Ixtacomitán as water levels rose. Additionally, over 1,000 people at a religious event in Pichucalco were forced to evacuate.[15][17]
