Tryptofunk
Formed at the end of 2017 in Tauranga, New Zealand. Tryptofunk is a funk/hiphop group.[1] The founding members are Dhaivat Mehta & Kingsley Smith[2][3], (aka: Dr Archaeo & DJ Kingz).
*Musical style: Classic Funk over contemporary HipHop beats, with elements of Rock, Reggae, & EDM. Rap bars are akin to Gangsta, G-Funk, & OG rappers; using Spiritual/Social themes. The Explicit nature of some of their lyrics is a reference (stylistically) to Gangsta Rap from the 1990s & 2000s, hence their G-Funk inspired tribute album, Vol 3.0.[4]
Dr Archaeo, (lead Rap vocals); Dr Archaeo has been a poet[5], rapper & performer in Tauranga for several years, with major contributions (rap & spoken dialogue) to the 2014 D-Day Saints album[6]. He has also done several solo projects, (both as a poet & a rapper). He became frontman for local Tauranga Rap/Rock group ‘L.O.D’ (Legion of Dissent)[7] in 2016, and then went on to front Tryptofunk, which he's been doing since it's conception in 2018.
DJ Kingz[8], (Bass, vocals & Producer); DJ Kingz was also a part of the D-Day Saints project[9] & L.O.D[10], and has been performing & composing in groups for over 30 years[11][12]. He was keyboardist for New Zealand rock band Knightshade[13][14][15] from 2015 - 2018, and also his own original rock project, Audio Storm[16][17][18], which has put out 2 albums.[19] He has released 2 instrumental albums in the genres of Jazz & Funk.[20] And he co-wrote & performed on Cassidy's 2017 album, which has a Euro-dance EDM flavour. As a producer, DJ Kingz has spent 20 years on various studio projects, but the last 4 years have been committed only to Tryptofunk. In that short time the group have produced 5 Albums and 3 EPs.[21] (see below for discography)
Tryptofunk's influences include: Run the Jewels, Funkedelic, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Supergroove, James Brown, NWA, Body Count, Ice-T, Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, 213, Nate Dogg, Eminem, Cypress Hill, RATM, Notorious Big, Tupac, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Run DMC, Jim Morrison, Led Zeppelin, Living Colour, & Faith No More.
