Shinji Tsuchida, better known by his stage name Tsutchie, is a Japanese musical artist. He is best known for being part of Shakkazombie, an influential Japanese hip-hop group during the 1990s and 2000s in Japan, as well as his contributions to anime soundtracks including Samurai Champloo and GANGSTA.[1][2]

Tsutchie formed Shakkazombie with two emcees, Osumi (Takeshi Osumi) and Hide-Bowie (Hidehiro Iguchi), in 1993. He has cited Run DMC and Beastie Boys as early musical influences.[3] Tsutchie was mainly responsible for the instrumental and production aspects. The group was active until 2002, when they released their last studio album. As a solo act, Tsutchie released two albums: "Thanks For Listening" in 2002 [4] and "This Is A Recording" in 2003.[5] Tsutchie was also part of the duo Ravolta along with Aiha Higurashi, releasing an album "Sky" in 1998.[6]

Besides his involvement in Shakkazombie, Tsutchie is known for his contributions to anime soundtracks. In 1998, Tsutchie contributed to the music for the final special episode "Yose Atsume Blues" of Cowboy Bebop.[7] In 2004, Tsutchie contributed to the Samurai Champloo soundtrack, along with Nujabes, Fat Jon, and FORCE OF NATURE. The anime has four released soundtrack albums; Tsutchie created Samurai Champloo Music Record: Masta with FORCE OF NATURE and later also created Samurai Champloo Music Record: Playlist. The music from Samurai Champloo has attained a cult following in the lo-fi hip hop community.[8] This is discussed in detail in an interview between director Shinichiro Watanabe and Tsutchie.[9]

More recently, he launched a music label, Sync Twice, in 2011 which features up-and-coming Japanese artists.[10] He created the soundtrack for the anime GANGSTA in 2015.[11]
