Twice As Good, aka 2XG, is an American blues band from the Elem Indian Colony in California that formed in 2003. The band currently resides in Santa Rosa, California, and consists of Paul and Richard Steward, a son-father duo.[1] They have released seven albums to date.[2]
History
Early years (2003-2007)
Paul and Richard grew up on the Elem Indian Colony of Pomo Indians near Clearlake Oaks, California. They left the colony in 1995 due to unrest within the tribe.[3]
Initially, they played with a variety of bands. One of the main bands they played with, the Indian group Red Man Blues, broke up in May 2003 and led to the formation of Twice As Good that same year.[2]
They first played at Terry's Southern BBQ in Santa Rosa, California.[4]
The band’s first album, 2XG, was released in 2005.[5] It contained eight songs, including a self-titled track as the opener.
The following year they released Cover to Cover, an album containing seventeen tracks.[6]
The band was featured in the Fall 2007 edition of the News From Native California.[7]
In 2007, the band performed live at the Pala Casino and subsequently released the album Live At Pala Casino 2007 with ten tracks.[8]
If That's Alright With You (2009)
The duo hires a variety of drummers and bassists to perform with them. For their 2009 performance at the Chicago Blues Festival, their bassist was Johnny B. Gayden.[9]
In 2009, the band released their fourth album, If That's Alright With You.[9] They won the Blues Album of the Year award at the 2010 Native American Music Awards (NAMA 12).[10] The band performed the closing performance for NAMA 12.[10]
Back to Clearlake Oaks & That's All I Need (2012-2015)
Twice As Good released their fifth album, Back to Clearlake Oaks, in 2012.[11] The album contains ten tracks, including the award-winning track "Good Evening, Good Night".[12]
The band won the Blues Song of the Year at the 2013 Indian Summer Music Awards, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.[12]
In the summer of 2014, the band performed at both of the National Museum of the American Indian locations (New York City & Washington DC).[13]
Their album That's All I Need was released in 2014 with twelve tracks.[14]
Double Down (2020-present)
Twice As Good’s seventh album, Double Down, was released in December 2020 and features ten tracks.[15]
Behind the Name
In a 2011 interview with SFGate and a 2015 article by the Gualala Arts Center, Paul and Richard detailed the history and naming of the band.[9][16]
While explaining the name, Richard said, "A lot of people wouldn't know what I'm talking about. They think we're bragging." He then added, "We named ourselves that as a reminder that we're gonna work harder and better and do whatever it takes to make it. That is our mantra."[9]
They have said that they've been told, "You can’t make it in the music business, you got to be twice as good," replying to the sentiment with, "Well all right then. We will be, Twice As Good."
